■ Each year in June, Haleiwa Harbor comes alive with the sights and sounds of sport fishermen, their family and friends and spectators. They gather for three days of sun, fun and hopefully plenty of fish. They came for the annual Northshore Hanapa‘a Jackpot Fishing Tournament, a serious yet fun contest, which had a $25,000 jackpot this year. There are four species of fish that qualify for prize money: Pacific blue marlin; yellowfin, or Allison tuna; ono, or wahoo; and mahimahi, or dorado. The highest Combined catch weight after three days wins the grand prize. To share the wealth, daily prizes are awarded for the largest fish in each category, each day. Also, the largest flag fish for the tournament wins a grand prize.
