■ The after-school boating safety program is only one of five major areas in Kailua High School’s Marine Science Program. The other areas are Marine Science I, 11 and I II. arid the aquaculture program.
Marine Science I is an introductory course for grades 10 through 12,.which covers such topics as beach safety, dangerous marine life, plankton, algae (/imu), tides, beaches, waves, sharks, whales, invertebrates, fish and sewage treatment.
Marine Science II is a second-year course that involves detailed studies in specific areas. The first quarter is devoted to: boat safety and seamanship. The second quarter covers outboard maintenance, repair and use, winds, currents, a shark brain dissection, beach erosion, marine chemistry and a comprehensive ecological study comparing Kawai Nui Marsh and Makai Pier.
