In spectacular flat-water paddling. 14 international athletes broke records in the two-day, 4th Annual Steinlager Hawaiian Canoe & Kayak Championships on the Ala Wai Canal on the weekend of October 13 and 14.
The event drew 250 competitors from Australia, Canada, France (Tahiti), New Zealand, Norway, Sweden and the United States. The U.S. paddlers came from across the nation, including California, Indiana, Hawaii, Michigan, New York, Ohio and Washington. Hawaiian Island representatives included those from the Big Island, Kaua’i, Maui, Moloka’i and O’ahu.
Entrants in open men’s and women’s, men’s and women’s masters, and junior men’s and women’s divisions raced one-person outrigger canoes, surf skis, KI (Olympic design) kayaks and, for the first time ever on the 250-meter flat-water course, six-person outrigger canoes.
