■ It started out like any other fishing trip-our plane was delayed. When we did arrive in Hilo, we quickly packed and loaded up for our two-day weekend. As soon as Glen Nakaishi came home from work, we started the long drive to Kona to join my sister Cindy Cantiberos and her family. It was dark when we arrived. Dear HFN Editors, A copy of your newspaper has drifted our way, and even if it is last month’s, and even if the fishing experts aren’t many among us, we all enjoyed reading such a good newspaper. In particular, the stories on the Jungle Ulua Tournament in Kalaupapa, and the cover story of a woman fishing champion (if not the tournament winner)-is fascinating stuff. ■ A recent headline in the local morning daily announced a victory for consumer activists in the war to save dolphins from dying in the dreaded “wall of death,” or drift nets. After 18 months of well-publicized pressure to boycott American companies using tuna caught in the same nets that trap and kill the mammals, three of the biggest tuna canners announced that they would no longer use tuna caught in this manner. The announcement followed on the heels of federal legislation prohibiting the use of explosives near tuna pods. The explosives are used to disrupt the dolphin’s sonar but sometimes result in knocking them unconscious after which the air-breathing mammals drown. The Earth-Island Institute led the consumer boycott after one of its members courageously signed on a tuna vessel…

■ Capt. R. O. and crewman Mitch Koss on the FINEST KIND were the marlin dominators during the first 10 days of the month. First R. 0. and Mitch boated a 365-lb Pacific blue marlin for Steve Wagner. The MC-buoy had been the most productive FAD during the windy weather, so the boys headed out to that spot and picked up a couple of nice baits to use. They walked those tuna around the buoy for two hours before pulling them in and switching to plastic lures. Within minutes, they had a strike on the short rigger reel packed with 130-lb test line rigged with a Sonoda General Lure. They were about 200 yards from the buoy. ■ Leptospirosis is a disease that has become increasingly important in recent years as a danger to the public’s health in Hawai‘1. It is now the 10th most commonly reported infectious disease in the islands. It is especially unfortunate that it remains an ongoing health risk to the finest and most active members of our community-those who love outdoor activities-through their contact with contaminated fresh water, mud, damp soil, and infected animals. Although leptospirosis may be self-limiting, with little more than flulike symptoms in its mild form, it can also become seriously debilitating, damaging internal organs like the kidneys. It is occasionally fatal. The infecting organism is a spirochete, which is a type of bacteria. The leptospira bacteria lives mainly in kidneys of rats, although mongooses, dogs, cats, cattle and…

Calling All Commercial Fishermen: Sympathy is not enough in the dolphin debate. Unite! Mobilize! Fight the injustice! Lumbermen from the Northwest drove their trucks to Washington D. C. to address the stupidity of environmental concerns for the spotted owl. They sought solutions. They addressed congressmen to be realistic and save their livelihood. Can you do less? Dolphins not only frustrate, they jeopardize your business-providing food for people-as well as your ability to make a living by hard work, and a large investment in a boat and equipment. I deplore a hopeless attitude. I quote, “Turn out the lights and go to sleep,” and, “You can go a whole week without anything.” Of course sympathizers deny explosives. ■ The weather improved during the last month, tut we still had a week of high winds with gale warnings. Keehi Boat Club members had a good month. Marlin were still in short supply, but Bill Mossman caught a 235-lb Pacific blue on the 18th and Jim Sullivan won the monthly tournament with a 219-lb marlin. There were plenty of mahimahi ranging from 8 to 34 lbs caught during the month. Jeff Perreira and Bill caught a 23-and a 26-lb ono, the first reported by club members for the year. Good catches of aku and a lot of bottomfish were also brought in by club members. Ed Nelson joined the club last year, and since then his name has often been on the monthly catch reports. ■ Club Nautico, a national network of powerboat rental centers, has opened its first center in Hawai’i. Club Nautico of the Wai’anae Coast, located at the Wai’anae Small Boat Harbor (85-371 Farrington Highway), is owned and operated by Tom and June Corea under a franchise agreement with Adventurent Inc. of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Adven-turent oversees more than 65 franchised and company-owned centers in the United States and the Caribbean. Club Nautico of the Wai’anae Coast will rent 25-foot Hydra-Sports boats, cabin or center-console models, by the day of half-day. In addition, the center rents offshore fishing tackle and snorkeling gear. Any qualified adult may rent equipment, but members of Club Nautico, who pay an initiation fee and annual dues, are entitled to substantial discounts on rental fees. There are more…

1. Lures such as the 20+ and 30+ crankbaits reach depths in excess of their names when trolled. 2. Lighter line will allow a lure to run deeper. 3. Keep the drag set extremely light while trolling. 4. Activate the “Fish Alarm” to call attention to fish being passed over. 5. Use plastic marker buoys to pinpoint schools or to establish a structure pattern. 6. The use of rod holders is suggested when trolling. They free up the anglers’ hands and take the “work” out of trolling. 7. Start out with different colored lures to establish a preference. Once a pattern develops, change to the preferred color. 8. Every year around now it gets like this because hunting season ties up what free time there is, and heavy northerly and Kona winds howl pretty regularly, keeping much of the Pine Isle fleet ashore. There were, however, some folks who did manage to get out between storms and bring home some tasty table food from the sea for their families and friends. ■ Spring came to the Windward Coast with a howling wind and a continuous squall line that kept everyone damp and cold. However, the weather cleared up after one week and then came the fish. The long winter with scarce fish ended, and the weekday fishermen started to find open schools of mahimahi and rubbish with fish underneath. The FADs, or buoys, collected small aku and, even better, big shibi weighing 50 to 90 lbs. Big marlin were seen snapping the monofilament lines of unsuspecting trollers with their light tackle. Some fishermen found Kane’ohe Bay a pleasant surprise. Even with all the pollution thrown into its water, the biggest bay on O’ahu still produces octopus and several good game fish. ■ After a month of staying off the sea due to other commitments, I was invited back on the PINK LADY on March 25. The weather report for that day was mostly sunny with brief morning showers and variable winds of 5 to 15 mph. After leaving the Wailoa Boat Ramp at around 6 a.m. I asked Capt. Itsuo Kitamura what the game plan would be for the day. He said, “Let’s go for ono along the south side.” So after we left the harbor crewmember Masato “Mugs” Nishida and I got the lines out.
