Fishing with unmatched consistency, the team aboard Capt. Juan Waroquiers’ 36-foot charterboat, the ILLUSION, scored their second major tournament win of the 1989 Hawai‘i fishing season when they took the $29,400 first-place purse in the Second Annual Okoe Bay Rendezvous held in South Kona in early September. Honokohau Harbor diesel mechanic Dan Isaacson landed the second largest fish of the event when he boated a 404½-lb Pacific blue marlin while aboard the ILLUSION on the first day of the three-day affair. Dan’s big fish was not big enough to top the total weight points that were being continually racked up by some of the other 11 teams in the big-money jackpot event, but Dan scored with an additional blue marlin weighing 122 lbs on the second day of the competition.…

We have changed the name of Shelter II to Anchor Point Lodge. Little does anyone know that the little cove at Shelter Island between Shelter Lodge and Anchor Point Lodge is called Adam’s Anchorage. This and the fact that the new lodge is located on the southern most point of Shelter Island is how Anchor Point Lodge got its new name. A new development underway is the Alaska Connections Explorers Program. The concept for the program grew out of an increasing interest in expanding the Alaska experience beyond our fishing program. The intent of the program will be to expose individuals to a variety of activities related to the Alaska outdoors. Tentative activities include wilderness hiking, outdoor camping and cooking, kayaking, archery, firearms marksmanship, wildlife education, flyfishing and skeet shooting.…

At one time or another most of us heard stories from family or friends about an uncle or cousin who, while bunting, came across a deer or a wild boar walking along a dirt road. And, although not a very sporting method, running it over with the jeep proved to be very effective. Would you believe running over a marlin with a boat? “How could such a thing happen?” you ask. An Adventurous Week After two long months of planning, three very hardworking friends of mine met me at the Hilo Airport on a Saturday morning, very early. Da’ KULT Meets Steelhead Juneau, Alaska. We were ail gathered at the home of Blake Kazama listening to Dave Horton give an orientation lecture on some exciting steelhead fishing at Admiralty island. Because Admiralty Island has the world’s largest population of brown or grizzly bears, Dave was talking about the possibilities of an encounter with one. “Now you guys with the handguns, the .357s and the .44 magnums, if you have to shoot, keep shooting until you’re out of ammo! September saw the lowest billfish count of the year, with 26 blues and three spearfish being weighed. This total was still ahead of last year’s monthly count of 19 billfish. But another monster marlin was weighed in Lahaina Harbor; an 820-lb Pacific blue marlin was brought in on the 31-foot Bertram, the ABSOLUTE. Capt. Charlie Sims and crewman Mike Nesbitt were on an afternoon half-day charter and headed out to the “Factory” to see what they could raise when crewman Nesbitt spotted their marlin. It took a swipe at a white Clark Bone Head Lure and turned away. Mike free-spooled the lure and snagged the marlin right in the eye socket. On August 26, 247 keiki, ages 5 to 13, participated in the Fifth Annual Keiki Fishing Derby, sponsored by the Lehua Jaycees, the Hilo Casting Club, the Gas Company and Gas Express. The crew from KHON-TV’s “Let’s Go Fishing” was on hand to video the derby, which will be shown on an upcoming episode of Hari’s fishing show. Fishing was done on Coconut Island, and the top prize went to Nyra Dee Okino who had a 5-ib balloon fish. Nyra Dee won a half-day fishing trip on the 28-foot charterboat, the OMEGA, and hotel accomodations at Hotel King Kamehameha. Rep. Patricia Saiki’s amendment to include tuna in the Magni.’rm Act for the purpose of managing and conserving this valuable Pacific fisheries resource recently passed, the full Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committee ot rhe U.S. House. The Saiki tuna amendment is now included in the reauthorization of the Fisheries Conservation and Management Act which goes to the full House for approval. “I am extremely pleased,” Rep. Saiki said after her committee took action, “that my amendment met with success today. The United States is virtually the last I major country which does not assert jurisdiction over tuna resources within our own 200-mile exclusive economic zone (EEZ) As I told my colleagues on the committee today, the rationale for continuing to exclude tuna is no longer valid.” All countries except the…

Some lures have a tendency to twist your line. This is especially evident with a spinning outfit. When such a condition occurs hers’s a quick fix. Remove the lure, and while running the boat at idle speed, let 75 to 80 yards of line out behind the boat. Pull the line through the water for a hundred yards or so. This will straighten out your line and remove the kinks. Before retying the lure, check the line between thumb and fore-finger. Clip off above any nicks, as this will weaken the line.
