Hawai‘i is the center of the marlin universe. With reverence reserved for gods, Hawaii’s anglers and visitors annually Set new world records for marlin captures and research. Tournaments adorn summer weekends, but granddaddy of them all is the 31st Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament (HIBT). Held each summer during the peak marlin run in late July and early August, the HIBT is a massive prestige event. It has set international standards for tournament quality and recently contributed valuable knowledge to scientists starving for information about pelagic fish. The tournament has grown from an original 22 local teams to where the flags of at least 20 nations will be raised over Honokohau Harbor in Kailua-Kona, Hawai‘i, the traditional site of the HIBT, on July 28. The International Game Fish Association (IGFA) recently announced official certification of the previously vacant 30-lb test women’s world record for broadbill swordfish. Weighing in at 267 lbs, the record fish was taken in the wee hours of the morning of June 21, 1988, by Cherie Waroquiers of Hawai‘i who was using 30-lb test Maxima® Ultragreen™ fishing line. Fishing aboard the 36’ Topaz ILLUSION, skippered by her husband Juan Waroquiers, Cherie dropped her bait about 15 miles out of Honoka‘a Harbor, near their home on the Big Island. At approximately 1:50 a.m., the broadbill took the dead akule (bigeye scad) as it drifted about 20 feet beneath the surface. After two hours of intense battle, the record fish was gaffed and boated. June was another month of gusty trades and high surf. It should have been a good month for marlin, yet few were reported. As often happens, Mother Nature really decided for us what would happen. We can forecast and plan, but in the end forces that we don’t always understand are the ones that either make or break our fishing. Tuna Hearing Senator Daniel K. Inouye recently chaired a hearing on the feasibility of including tuna under the fishery management authority of the federal government. The hearing of the Senate Committee of Commerce, Science and Transportation was on Thursday, July 20th at 2 p.m. “I believe there is good reason to establish U.S. controls on the tuna fishing industry, but I am listening to arguments on both sides of this issue,” said Senator Inouye. The U.S. government currently exercises no controls on the domestic of foreign tuna fleets within the U.S. 200-mile Exclusive Economic Zone. Tuna were not included among the species regulated by the government under the Magnuson Act because of arguments, that they are highly migratory, and spend most of their life in international waters rather than in…

Eight years ago when I returned to Moloka‘i after spending four years in the service, I bought myself a small rod and reel and started whipping. I started by walking the shoreline, but, after getting some mean coral scrapes, I decided there must be a better way and I borrowed my father’s 11’ Yamaha with a 9i-hp Johnson motor. Once I was able to get to better grounds I started using a Penn 430SS reel with a 6i-foot medium-light rod and 6-to 10-lb test line. It’s inevitable. Whenever ulua fishermen gather on the rocks for a night of ulua fishing, there is always talk of ciguatera poisoning. The talk is mostly what each fisherman has heard or read somewhere, but nobody seems to be clear on ciguatera poisoning and what causes it, its effect on human consumers, and what can be done if you eat a “hot” or tainted fish. To clear up questions that seem to have only guesses for answers, I interviewed Dr. Yoshitsugi Hokama, professor of pathology at the University of Hawaii, Manoa Campus. Along with many other researchers, Dr. Hokama has been credited with researching ciguatoxin (which is the toxin in fish that can cause ciguatera, a type of fish poisoning). “Slow and in the blind” best described the level of fishing action for ‘ahi during the midsummer. The “yellow guys,” as they are affectionately referred to, continued to be shy and elusive. Blind strikes seemed to be the only indication of their presence. Marlin action continued to be consistent, with blues dominating the catch report. A few striped marlin and spearfish were also reported. A big surprise during the month was the appearance of five sailfish in the catch report: Herb Duncan, captain of the NORA ANN, captured two of these rare billfish. Well-known commercial fisherman Leslie Cansibog captured the largest marlin reported during the month. In the spring or 1988, Bill “Mac” McMeechan was fishing his usual holes up the North Fork when he noticed an odd looking shape in the weedline. Mac had never seen anything like it in Lake Wilson before. Sure Mac and all the reservoir regulars knew of the infestation of the fishery by the armored catfish, which is similar to the aquarium Plecostamus, but this ominous appearing creature was new to him. Several years ago, I had the opportunity to visit with and listen to a number of kupuna (elders) who were discussing k’i pohaku (Hawaiian petroglyphs). I accompanied them to several ki‘i pohaku fields to hear on the spot interpretations of some of the findings in the area. I was amazed to hear these knowledgeable Hawaiians present their stories of these ancient art forms. In recent years, I have had the opportunity to work closely with many of the kupuna thoughout Hawai‘i and 1 would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank them for many of their stories that have been featured in HFN. Summer is here, but only a few fish decided to show up. It looks like the big summer fishing season will be late and conditions will frustrate all the anglers eager to try out their new gear on some unsuspecting fish. Many fishermen are waiting for the big schools of ‘ahi that normally migrate past the islands during the summer months. After a brief period when ‘ahi were brought in on several boats, the bite slowed down to the point where just one ‘ahi was brought in by the boats that left the harbor to go fishing on any given day. In one of the most exciting tournament finishes in many years, Tom Kiernan’s REEL AFFAIR topped a seemingly unbeatable 630-lb marlin and another team with a total of four qualifying Pacific blues to take the Third Annual Big Island Invitational Marlin Tournament in Kona in mid-June. The win was iced when REEL AFFAIR team member John Coppock landed a 540-lb blue with less than 10 minutes to go before the stop fishing signal on the third and final day of fishing. It was his second qualifying billfish of the event, and the fourth for the hard fishing team aboard Kiernan’s 35’ Bertram, skippered by Capt. Dick Godbehere.
