■ Persistent trade winds will be the dominant weather feature. July is fair weather month-on land. Over the waters expect gusty trades on six to 14 days this month. Surf-wise, northwest wave activity is at a minimum with low surf heights of 0 to 5 feet at northern shores. Surf action along southern shores will peak in July and extend into September. Mariners are advised of the possible occurrence of two kinds of potentially hazardous weather: thunderstorms with heavy rain from an upper trough and tropical cyclone invasions into Hawai‘i waters.…

■ A fish weighing over 10 times the breaking strain of the line it was caugnt on took top awards at the 1989 Gentry Sports Hawaii Light Tackle Tournament (HLTT) after three days of competitive fishing in the waters off the Kona Coast, Capt. Juan Waroquiers, owner and operator of the 36’ charterboat IL-LUSION; fought the winning 337½-lb Pacific blue marlin on 30-lb test for two and a half hours before landing it. Juan’s catch qualified him for the 10-to-l award from the International Game Fish Association. Less than 200 anglers in the 50-year history of the IGFA have qualified for this prestigious award. It also won him a slew of prizes including a week for two at Christmas Island, a Shimano BeastMaster two-speed” reel and an Ed Ahnstedt custom…

■ The release of the news that ciguatera poisoning is suspected of having killed two of the Atlantic bottlenose dolphins housed in the lagoon at the Hyatt Regency Waikoloa on the Big Island has brought this nasty toxin, and its environmental causes, into the limelight once again. Investigators believe that naturally occurring mullet eaten by the Hyatt dolphins (despite regular feedings by their captors) may have contained quantities of the occasionally deadly toxin. The presence of ciguatoxin in the Hyatt lagoon came as a surprise to many because of the elaborate filtration and water quality measures touted by developer Chris Hemmeter and the luxury Hyatt hotel management. Ciguatera is generally associated with nutrient-rich disturbed environments, according to scientists familiar with the toxin. Dredging, sewage disposal and unchecked run-off that carries…

■ Gusty trade winds continued to plague the Windward Coast due to the abundance of many high pressure systems passing near the Hawai-; ian Islands. These systems sometimes bring rubbish in toward the island, and that causes trie rnahimahi to show up underneath the rubbish. But the recent trade winds produced only a short run of rubbish, which in turn attracted lots of fish but only for a little while. Mark Andrews of the KAMAKANI told me that one week there was rubbish ail over the place, and the next week it just disappeared. Naturally a few other boaters caught mahimahi, but not like they had during the previous month. The usual ‘ahi season on the Windward Coast is in July. First we get striped marlin and then big open…

He was the only son in his family, so his three older sisters as well as his beloved mother and father took great care in ^raising Hokuali’i. ■ When I (Russ) first bought and installed a pH meter on my bass rig, I was bombarded with inquiries on how effectively that electronic gadget worked. Being a novice in the use of the instrument, I was unable to answer those questions with confidence. Nevertheless, the instrument sure looked good and it fit in perfectly with the array of razzle-dazzle electronics in my boat. ■ The road finally broke through the tree line, and I got my first look at the shore. Rugged black lava bordered the deep blue ocean. I reflected fora moment on how lucky I was to be living on the Big Island and having the opportunity to come to beautiful places like this to relax while enjoying one of my favorite pastimes, shorecasting. In this second part, we will discuss the benefits of a 16-degree transducer cone angle, compared to a 32-or 40-degree cone, and vice versa. Many anglers using their depth sounder to look for fish or structure believe they are looking at a lot more area than they actually are. ■ Aku fishing from a sport boat is one of the most exciting kinds of fishing we can enjoy. To see birds twirling, squawking and performing acrobatics in pursuit of the bait from the air, aku jumping, splashing and chasing the bait from the water, and all the sport fishermen chasing this whole group of animals is coming as close to the essence of life as we can come. We are spending thousands of dollars on boats, equipment and gas to pursue and catch these fish. In reality we are presenting to the aku artificial objects that mimic natural bait and do not chase these fish away. ■ With typical Maui fishing weather, strong trade winds and rough waters, the Annual Memorial Maalaea Boat and Fishing Club Tournament got underway at 12:01a.m. on Saturday, May 27, 1989. The event featured three days of all-out fishing, including both bottomfishing and trolling. Prizes were $100 for first place, $50 for second place, $25 for third place, and $100 for the largest fish in both categories. ■ Where are the ‘ahi? That was the question that was foremost on every fisherman’s mind. ‘Ahi fever had begun to spread. Rumors began to feed rumors; and before you knew it, the parking lot at the Wafanae Boat Harbor was filled beyond capacity. Trucks, with trailers attached, were parked on the coral shoulder all the way out to Farrington Highway. A few lucky fishermen did manage to land a small number of these husky yellowfin tuna, but the large schools have not been seen.
