Let Those Kahala Live ■ The bottomfishing grounds off Keahole on the Big Island’s Kona Coast had been producing well and many highly marketable bottomfish had been carefully iced in anticipation of a ready market on shore. Surrounding the small boats working the vast underwater shelf just north of Kona’s productive marlin fishing area called “The Grounds” were the carcasses of several fish that would not find a ready market on shore. Some other fish, still struggling against an inflated air bladder, tried desperately to return to the depths. These “trash fish,” discarded by the bottomfishermen because they had no market value or were considered pests, were predominantly kahala (amberjack). ■ The black ⅛-oz tout skipped and danced along the rocky bottom as I worked the retrieve in a short, choppy pattern. My short stout HMG rod was perfect for this kind of whipping, especially when I used a leadhead jig in deep water. I could easily see the black tout making its way up to the water’s surface, and a handful of colorful moano were in hot pursuit. Several moano swam up to the tout for a close look and then immediately vanished among the large coral heads. I was puzzled by their shyness, and I witness the same behavior on my very next cast. ■ Not long ago, my girlfriend, Arlene, and I went on a weekend fishing trip. We were looking for a different place to fish, so when we found a nice area where we could camp, we decided to stay there. I brought along three poles, but used only two of them. Both poles had extended 4/0 reels filled with 80-lb Maxima line. I cast out my poles, and within seconds the bait went down. We were sitting by the poles and talking story when an eel struck and cut one of my mainlines. I rerigged, rebaited and recast. Moments later, at about 9 p.m., I had a strike. ■ The celebrities are back on the Kohala Coast. During the first week of November, the Hyatt Regency Waikoloa, Hawaii’s brand-new fantasy resort, is hosting Steve Garvey and several other celebrities from the sports and entertainment world for a week of big-game fishing and championship golfing. The 1988 Steve Garvey Billfish and Golf Classic kicked off on October 30 with a welcoming reception for all the anglers and golfers. This marks the fifth anniversary of the event, which will later be aired on national, television. During the 1987 event, Steve Garvey had some luck on the MARLIN MAGIC. Mary Bitterman is challenging the incumbent, and she showed a strong environmental stance during a recent interview at her compaign headquarters in Honolulu. Bitterman is soft-spoken but confident as she speaks of Hawaii and the nation. Her background as a leader at the Voice of America, Public Television and East West Center gives her a broad-based overview of a wide spectrum of issues that will affect the entire Pacific Basin as big business poises to exploit the resources of island countries. Rob McReynolds, a Kaua‘i commercial and charter fisherman, introduced me to what I call the “shirtsleeve chum bag.” We were bottomfishing off the north coast of Kaua‘i (Bob launches his 24’ Wilson KE AHO at ‘Anini), and Rob was using a narrow cloth cone nearly 2 feet long to drop his palu. The bag held a lot of chum, of course, but that wasn’t the main reason for its length. Once he filled the bag with chum, Rob rolled it up to keep the contents securely inside during the bag’s descent. Once rolled up, the bag’s length helped ensure that the bait would stay put until the lead weight attached to the line sank the bag to the desired depth. ■ Last year Asia won it. This year it was Europe’s turn. Now U.S. teams—both from the mainland and from Hawai’i—are gearing up to try to take the title back at the 31st Annual Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament next August off the Kona Coast of the Big Island. Among the 80 teams that will be invited to compete in this World Series of big-game fishing next year are tow from Japan, including the 1987 winner, and the team from the Blinker Sport and Gamefish Club, of Hamburg, West Germany, that won this year’s 30th annual tourney in-a contest that was in doubt until the final moments. ■ The Fifth Annual Rubber Raft Tournament, coordinated by Larry Mata, Glenn Mossman, Tom Baptista, Wally Pimental and Gary Kneeland, who all work at the Pacific Missile Range Facility, was held on August 6. The Kiki a Ola Boat Harbor was littered with rubber rafts waiting for the signal to begin the eight-hour trolling tournament for “anything that would take a lure.” When the signal sounded at 6 a.m., the sound of motors chugging, sputtering and purring coupled with the excited shouts of the raft captains and crewmembers, the tournament officially began. Ten raft teams, captained by Larry Mata, Glenn Mossman, Gary Kneeland, Solomon Ono, Caesar Jardin; Wally Pimental, David Kauai, Dave Taylor, George Kanna and Bran Nakaahiki, participated in the tournament. ■ ‘Tis the season to catch marlin, and the Kewalo fleet is constantly bringing the fish back to port. The sleek, slender blues with their majestic bills hang in silent tribute as the anglers pose with their trophy and recall the agonizing minutes of joy and personal accomplishment. Upon their arrival to the barn, the anglers feel a dramatic surge of adrenalin and the fatigue and aching muscles are no longer present as they repeat their stories from the hookup to the fighting and boarding of their magnificent gamefish. ■ I recently took a trip down under—to Sydney, Australia, that is. Just after sunset on a crisp evening, the moon rose almost full over the Harbor Bridge and the famous Opera House. As the moon glistened down on the waters of Port Jackson, I remembered how keen good fishermen were about watching the moon. Warren Ackerman told me that he goes marlin fishing six to 10 days before the full moon, because at this time the tides are “right” off Kona. My commercial fishing buddy Tony Stormont, however, likes to fish at night, a day or two before and after the full moon. ■ Lahaina’s top marlin for September was landed by the JUDY ANN II and captured by angler Matthew Cutchen. This 438-lb blue took an hour and 45 minutes to land on 130-lb test tackle. Capt. Jim Gale and crewman Dion Abbott were working the JUDY ANN II about 5 miles off Kaumalapau, on the backside of Lana‘i, when the fish ran in on the short rigger, tagged a Dr. Wong lure and peeled off 450 yards of line on the initial run. Once their fish was finally secure, they found that it was just too large and too heavy to haul aboard the JUDY ANN II. So Capt.
