■ Ah, what a month! High, winds, rough water, and no fish. Now, I don’t really mean none at all, but no big ones came up. A few mahimahi were reported. Small ‘ahi and aku were still around, although the HH-buoy did not pay off at all. Charter boat captains told me that the 80-lb ‘ahi were around, and that’s good news. Winter is usually slow for fishing. I read once that the old Hawaiians repaired their nets and fished only close to shore in the winter. They were smart. The wind can come up fast, and flat water can turn mean in a matter of hours.
