pomaika’i: good luck po’ino: bad luck
■ The fierce winds (makani), arriving overnight from the northeast (hikina ’akau), turned the calm sea of Kailua into a raving monster. When the storm hit, all the fishermen in the quiet Kailua village scrambled for their canoes, which were sitting at the ocean’s edge, to move them to safe grounds. In all the confusion at the oceanfront, Kekoa, a famous fisherman of the village, was caught in a huge wave, which swept him out to sea. The departure of Kekoa left a great void with his wife, Lehua, and their 15 children.
The villagers of Kailua, who had been hit hard economically by that storm, tried to give aid to Lehua’s remaining family. However, the entire village was struggling just to survive on…
