■ In ancient times, the Hawaiian lawai’a (fisherman) had to go fishing in order to survive. Today, only commercial fishermen need to go fishing regularly to survive. However, it has been suggested by several medical people that recreation be included in our lives for good health. With that recommendation in mind, 1 highly recommend some form of fishing be the chosen activity for every individual and family in Hawai’i.
There are so many people in Hawai’i who have not taken the opportunity to enjoy the thrills and challenges of fishing. Defined loosely, the fishing I speak of includes gathering limu, picking ‘opihi, pipipi, kupee, ha’uke’uke, catching freshwater ’o’opu, ’opae, pupu, pole fishing on the reefs, spearfishing, throwing net, and many more too numerous to mention.
