■ Ko‘ako‘i was raised in a small fishing village in Pa‘ia by very poor family. Ko‘ako‘a’s mother, Kahea, watched over her large family of nine girls and Ko‘ako‘a. Manti, Ko‘ako‘a’s father, wo’ ked very hard as a fisherman but still struggled to survive with such a large family plus the annual taxes placed upon him by his konohiki (headman of the ahupua‘a, or land division). When he was five years old, Ko‘ako‘a was interested in how he received his name, Ke Kukulu O Ko‘ako‘a. Old, Rare and Valuable Nine grand for one fishing lure? That’s what an unidentified collector paid for a 138-year-old, silver-plated bass spoon at an antique fishing tackle auction last month in Kennebunk, Maine. The $9,240 bid was a new record. The previous highest price for an antique lure was $5,500 at last year’s edition of this annual auction. There are big bucks in old tackle boxes. A bamboo flyrod hooked $3,575, and a silver fishing reel, circa 1910, wound in $6,600 for its owner. The highest priced item, though, was a duck decoy that lured $60,000 from some daffy enthusiast. Enjoying Retirement ■ Almost every day between the hours of 6 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. you can find a pair of shoreline fishermen trying their luck at Hilo’s bayfront. On nearly every trip they catch something, whether it be papio, ‘o‘io, or even crab while using the crab casting technique. Mike lyo (my father), who introduced me to fishing very early in my years, says his persistence and getting up very early every day to reserve “the spot” makes him a successful fisherman. His partner, Masa Maebo (Stan Wright’s father-in-law), adds that using ‘o‘io for bait and patience are also factors in catching fish there. ■ If your favorite sport fish is not among the 151 species listed by the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) in their current world record programs, you may’ now have an opportunity to set an all-tackle world record! IGFA has announced that it is revising and expanding its all-tackle world record program by opening it to gamefish species not currently on their record lists (past catches included) and by reviewing well-documented applications for past catches that exceed their current listings. All-tackle records are maintained for the heaviest fish of a species caught according to IGFA angling rules on any line up to 60-kg (130-lb) class. The listings are being expanded to recognize catches of species which, though popular in various fishing areas, have never been documented in a world record…

■ After ten years it is hard to believe it all grew out of a simple, “Hey, we oughta have a women’s tournament!” muttered over a couple of beers at Huggo’s in Kona. Shawna Bybee gets the credit for the casual assertion that grew into Hawaii’s biggest and best known women’s fishing tournament. But the event would never have made the decade mark without the hard work of Cheryl Chesnut (now Ching), Teeter McPherson, and most of all Allison Metzler, who has held it all together from day one. Year 10 for the tournament blossomed beautifully with 63 teams anted up to fish the one-day affair, a reversal of the lackluster entry numbers drawn by many of the earlier Kona tournaments this year. report by Hawaii Fishing Coalition ■ The National Marine Fisheries Service “has indicated an interest in developing and implementing a long-range. 10-year recreational fishery enhancement program in conjunction with the state. Mark Helvey, federal coordinator for the NMFS recreational fishery management programs in the U.S. southwest region, met with several statewide recreational fishing organizations to gather information and inform at the grasstoots level. Helvey stressed that the program needs communication and cooperation between government agencies and recreational fishermen. Represented at the meeting were the Hawaii Fishing Coalition, Malama Na I‘a, TORCH and the Hawaii Council of Diving Clubs. ■ Nothing beats a long, hot summer of fishing on the Windward Coast, and the fishing has been even hotter than the temperature, figuratively speaking. ‘Ahi continued to be the prime target of the eager anglers while marlin strikes came in bunches on many boats. Mahimahi was very slow, which is normal for this time of the year. However, 18- to 20-lb aku and the really big ono have not appeared in large quantities. Perhaps the season for aku is late, and for the ono it just has been an off year. Only time will tell. The best news is that ‘ahi has come in record amounts this year, both in size and quantities. ■ “Why did we add a marlin division this year? Well, for eight years the fish were fifty-fifty ‘ahi and marlin, and sometimes we’d get a big marlin, like 900 pounds, so people started saying hey, how come you don’t give prizes for those too?” tournament organizer George Molholm said. And sure enough, those pesky marlin showed up again during the Ninth Annual Kona ‘Ahi/Marlin Tournament. In fact, the tournament produced more winning marlin than ‘ahi, and more teams entered the marlin division than the ‘ahi division. Teams could enter in either or both of the divisions. ■ A strong economic argument is the basis of a proposal now underway to mine the ocean floor within 50 miles of Hawai‘i. That argument suggests that the $19 billion per year trade deficit it costs the United States to obtain cobalt (an essential “strategic mineral”) is unacceptably high considering that the resource sits on the ocean floor off Hawaii. What that economic argument does not consider is the environmental impact of the mining proposal on the state of Hawai‘i and the long-term economic impact that environmental impact will create in Hawai‘i. Specifically, the mining of the sea bed off Hawai‘i will cause an immense amount of solid material to be released into circulation via the ocean currents that sweep past the mining area and Hawai‘i. ■ Aloha from Lahaina Town. Lahaina Town saw some big fish action, with the top three marlin for the year weighing in at more than 600 pounds. The top marlin for the year, weighing 675 lbs, was captured aboard the HINATEA, by Capt. Doug Barna and co-capt. Rich Newcomb. They found their fish off the lighthouse, backside Lana’i. It took a lure on 130-lb test line. The KANOA snagged the no. 2 marlin for the year, a 629-pounder taken during an afternoon half-charter. Co-capt.
