Thai’s the motto of Michelle Spalding of Kona, who after eight years of trying caught a 149½-lb Pacific blue marlin on 12-lb test line, a potential women’s world record, on July 22, 1986.
“The world record fish is not the story,” said Michelle from her mac nut farm on the side of the mountain overlooking Kailua-Kona. “The story is the years I spent seeking that record.”
The story began in 1954, when Michelle and her husband, Rufus, moved to Kona from Santa Barbara Michelle, who has always been athletic, who in fact was slated for the 1940 Olympics as a swimmer before the war broke out, had done quite a bit of fishing in the waters off California.
