■ November was another good month for fishing. The fish continued their feeding spree as if they expected the lake to freeze over for the winter making this their last meal for a while. At least that’s the way it was for most of the month until, right on schedule, we got our traditional Thanksgiving rains. Anyone who was out fishing over that long weekend will agree that that had to be some of the most miserable weather we’ve faced all year. It is the most talked about management tool nationally from east to west and a consideration in the state legislature. What is limited entry? It is one of the programs or tools that can be used by the government (state or federal) to control or manage the fishery for resource conservation and to simplify enforcement and management while maintaining an economic stability in the industry. It is a way to regulate the fishing privileges of fishermen or vessels to achieve economic or social objectives. ■ In the broad expanse of the loch, a lightening yellow sky silhouetted a thick black grove of kiawe trees. The cold morning waters of West Loch sparkled like a thousand golden stars. Each star seemed almost to dance and reflect the mirror calm and the strange, quiet solitude. A loud shrill concert of a hundred cicadas, each singing its own private melody, filled the cold air. From above came the swishing sound of a dove flying overhead, and off in the distance another dove cooed, its warm voice softly cutting through the morning chill that hung on the loch. ■ Aloha fellow fishermen. First off, let me introduce myself. My name is Ermin Fergerstrom, and I’ll be bringing you the Maui island report. To start things off I’ll tell you a little about myself, and then we’ll get into what you really want to hear—about the great fishing here on Maui! ■ Fishing Forecast is compiled from catch statistics gathered over the last 30 years. (Data sources include both commercial and recreational catches.) Therefore, the forecast shows general trends that have occurred over many years. From year to year, however, fishing success can vary a great deal for the same month. Changes in sea conditions here, and elsewhere, can mean poor fishing in a traditionally excellent month or great fishing in what is normally the off-season. Furthermore, the catch statistics are also influenced by fishing effort. During the summer months, for example, surface fishing is good and few anglers fish the bottom. ■ Help! We are asking the assistance of any readers of HAWAII FISHING NEWS whose trolling experience extends back into the early 1950s. We’d like to solve a mystery. In the summer issue of Marlin magazine, luremaker Bob Schneider makes an interesting claim. Bob takes credit for inventing the plastic big game trolling plugs so closely associated with Hawai‘i fishing. Bob makes his home in Florida, but was here working for the military at the time. He says that his experiments with the use of plastic resins to coat wooden trolling lures led him to make lures from the chunks of plastic, that hardened in his mixing cups. And he pegs the year at 1957. . We don’t question the man’s integrity or sincerity. But we wonder if other craftsmen…

■ A 20-foot log was at the center of some very hot mahimahi action during the month of November. A few frigate birds attracted the attention of Capt. Darol Britton and mate Daral Conklin aboard the ILIMA V. Closer inspection brought into view more birds, the log itself and an area that was loaded with fish. The bite was on! Those fish were starved! Anything thrown at them caused the fish to erupt from all directions. The feeding frenzy was so strong that mahimahi were hitting lures that ono had already stripped the skirts from! We’re talking bare hooks here, folks! Capt. Darol Britton took a breather and radioed his position to the nearby MAGGIE JOE. The ILIMA V continued trolling and gleaned 29 mahimahi, (25-lb size) 13 ono and…

■ A typical day throughout most of October and November at Wai‘anae Small Boat Harbor was peaceful and serene with the normal hustle and bustle of the launching site absent. On the flagpole, either one pennant for small craft advisory or two for storm warnings whipped through the air. Beginning with the weekend of October 19 and 20 when a hurricane barely bypassed the islands, two weeks of rain drenched the land past saturation point and the runoff of red mud turned the shoreline a murky brown. These conditions, together with the high winds and rough seas brought about by the hurricane weather, turned the water a milky green. That green water extended out as far as 20 miles and more. ■ The November Conservation Line, entitled “The Gill Net Menace,” drew a large amount of response—most of it favoring the HAWAII FISHING NEWS stance that gill nets ought to be banned to protect Hawaii’s fishing resources. There are a few corrections I must make. Specifically, I indicated that Hawaii had a law regarding the overall maximum length of gill nets. I was wrong; there is no maximum length at present, and that is scary—there certainly should be. More, in discussing enforcement I implied that the Division of Aquatic Resources handled enforcement. In fact, the Department of Land and Natural Resources actually has an enforcement division, and the understaffed division has to keep up with not only fishing law violations, but also hunting violations and other “natural resources” law problems. ■ Winter set in on the Windward Coast as the cold north wind began to blow, making it necessary to wear a jacket when out fishing. Normally these conditions produce mahimahi in large numbers and sizes, however, so far this year the fish have not shown up as in previous years. Could this year’s fabulous run of August mahimahi been the demise of the early winter group? Let’s hope not! Big-sized shibi-ko made one more big appearance at MM-buoy for Gerry Fukunaga on the JONEL. On a short, daytime, recreational fishing trip Gerry, along with Kendall Hakke and his friend Roy, swung by the buoy and started hooking some good-sized bigeye shibi-ko that weighed 50, 85, 80, 70 and 65 lbs each, in addition, they later added two medium mahimahi.…

■ Aloha and happy holidays from Lanai. Thanksgiving is long gone, Christmas is over, and the Lana‘i fleet still doesn’t have many slime stories to share. Fishing conditions for the most part were great, but the fishing is still lacking, and Lana‘i fishermen are wondering what’s going on. Jason “Wave Rider” Fujie worked hard but found “slim pickens” while trolling for tuna aboard the HOLO NALU. Blalah Hubin, Ralph Sakamura, Robert Amaral and most of the backside regulars also gave it their best shot, but didn’t find too many fish anywhere. Even Lana‘i’s “aku man,” Kazu Masada, got tired of wasting gas and stayed home to concentrate on home improvements until the fishing picks up. ■ 1986 is shaping up as a good year for tournament fishermen in Hawaii, for a lot of reasons. To start with, several new events are on the horizon, and several regular events have been altered for the better. Secondly, after the rotten fishing season of 1985 that affected virtually every tournament in Hawaii, things could hardly get worse. The excitement in the 1986 tournament season centers around the new events that will take place. Perhaps the most exciting is the new Hawaii Light Tackle Tournament (July 4 to 6) to be held in Kailua-Kona.
