■ One of the off-the-beaten-path pleasures I found when I came to Hawaii more than 20 years ago was the dock at Fisherman’s Wharf where tuna was unloaded. Another underrated source of enjoyment, even to a kama’aina, is the tuna auction at the United Fishing Agency in Chinatown during the early morning hours. And, of course, experiences associated with our world-famous Kona billfish tournaments can intrigue us for years. ■ What would you do if something went wrong with your dive? What new information is available about preventing the “bends”? These are just some of the questions that will be answered in the “Dive Medicine Update Workshop 1990” to be held in late March in Honolulu and Pearl City. The workshops will be led by Arthur Arnold, M.D., and Frank Farm, both from the state of Hawaii Hyperbaric Treatment Center at Kewalo Basin. They will discuss dive physiology (including health and fitness), dive tables and computers, diving accident trends in Hawai’i, emergency procedures (including preparation), new publications and the state hyperbaric treatment system. “The last workshop was held four years ago in 1986, so there’s quite a bit of information to update,” Dr. Arnold said. The Antibiotic Marlin ■ Let’s catch up on the tale of the antibiotic marlin and the $100 reward. First, some background. Last January, a National Marine Fisheries Service team headed by Dr. Christofer Boggs tagged 15 billfish and injected each with tetracycline before releasing it. The scientists hoped that the chemical would become part of the bony layers formed during the time the tetracycline stayed in the marlin’s system. If so, the tetracycline would act as a fluorescent dye marker to identify the growth ring formed following release. On recapture, examination of the rings in a bone, spine or otolith (a small bony structure in the head) would provide a means for determining the number of rings formed since release. ■ At the end of last year, the “Brudda Ulua Gang” ventured to various fishing locations. Ending up at the southern most part of the island, Keith Nehls, “Taz” Frendo and Nathan “N. K.” undertook a three-nighter and came away with four ulua and one ‘omilu. After arriving at their location at 10 p.m., Keith put it to the lead and slid live ta’ape (blue-lined snapper) while Taz slid tako (octopus). Two hours later, Keith had a mean strike. The bell sounded, and then a loud rapping sound cut through the air. Keith’s pole had flown out of its stand and was hanging over the cliffside by its safety cord. ■ When people talk to me about my cookbook, they often say they enjoy the number and variety of recipes in it. “At last,” they say, “I don’t have to keep cooking fish the same old way.” I feel that way, too, but not about fish. My problem is what to serve with it. My favorite standby menu is fish, hot rice (drizzled with shoyu, of course), canned or frozen corn kernels, and a green salad. There’s nothing better in my book, but it does get boring for someone who doesn’t eat the fish part of the meal. And, it’s hardly a company dish. ■ The air was filled with the sharp, snapping sounds of splashing sardines as Glenn Yamamoto and I patiently whipped around the huge school and hoped for a big strike. The Marquesan sardines were in season, and they were balling up in gigantic schools all over the murky green waters of the bay. An occasional swell and splashing white water meant one thing: papio were in the area. Glenn and I were whipping with glitter strips, Daredevils, ACME spoons and even topwater plugs, but we did not register a single strike. That’s when Glenn broke the silence, “This will get ’um. ■ The rains we have been having throughout the islands are making many of the shoreline fish very happy these-days. High waters in the rivers and streams send rich foods from the land to the ocean. There the happy shoreline fish get fat quickly on shrimp, crawfish and goby as well as pumpkin seeds, guava and taro. I have seen read and heard many stories of villagers who lived along the shoreline in ancient Hawai’i and fed their fish with taro. I have been told that this practice was commonplace in many villages in the days of old, and that it still occurs today. Hawaii’s Freshwater Fisheries ■ When I (Russ) first started freshwater fishing in 1984,1 picked up the “Freshwater Fishing in Hawaii” brochure (Fifth Printing, 1981) prepared by the state of Hawai’i, Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Aquatic Resources. The brochure is blue in color, and on its cover is an exciting illustration of a largemouth bass tailwalking on the water’s surface. How appropriate, I thought, as I noted that the cover illustration profoundly demonstrated that the largemouth bass is recognized as the most sought after freshwater game fish here in Hawai’i, as it is in North America. Should you ask why? Well, talk about die-hards, Jonathan and a comrade with a lot of enthusiasm, energy and imagination named Mark Cadiz decided to tackle the adventurous Ka’ena Point walk. On September 9, 1989 at the strokes of 10 p.m., 11 p.m. and 1 a.m., would you believe three ulua were caught? The ulua weighed 12 lbs 9 oz, 36 lbs and a whopping 51 lbs respectively.
