■ Every now and then a new event comes into being that is worthy of note. The Chuck Machado Light Tackle Tournament (July 19 to 21) is just such an event. Would you believe a potential IGFA world record was set during the inaugural event? Hawaii had never hosted a true light-tackle tournament—one that suggested that anglers fish anything lighter than 30-lb test line—so it was an experiment when Machado opened his four-tournament season with an event that allowed anglers their choice of 50-, 30-, 20- and 16-lb test line. ■ Kala had caught his prized moi fish, which he beached at Waimea Bay. The large fish stretched longer than Kala was tall. The awesome catch would have made any amateur fisherman proud of his feat. However, such was not the case for Kala. He was a rookie fisherman, but he remembered what his father told him—the first fish must be offered to the fish god Ku‘ula. This law now made him very sad. He was reluctant to observe the ancient traditions because he was so overjoyed with his catch. He wanted everyone to see the huge fish. ■ Rumors of a whale carcass adrift left everyone with bloated hopes during early July. A floating cargo net proved to have less loopholes and more fish. Ron Hill of Olathe, Kansas, angled a nice 47-lb bull mahimahi while fishing with Capt. Darol Britton aboard the ILIMA V. Steve Mobley of Garland, Texas, pulled in two more. Vance Ito of Los Angeles, California, added another, and Richard Little of Atlanta, Georgia, hauled in a couple of his own. Also on board that day was Ron Pestel of Koko Isle, Honolulu. ■ The big marlin are still making fishing news along the Kona Coast. Some 500-lb, 600-lb and 800-lb-plus sizes are arriving at the pier scales, and a marlin over the 1,000-lb size was caught along the Kona Coast in July. It weighed 1,060 lbs and was caught from aboard the PAMELA. Plus, there was a potential world record brought to the Kailua Pier on July 20 by angler Nancy Fann of Kona. Her marlin weighed 530½ lbs and was reeled in on 30-lb test line from the boat FANNTASTIC PLASTICS with Capt. Gene Vanderhoek. There was a super large crowd waiting at the Kailua pier to see that potential world-record marlin and to watch that happy angler as the crowd cheered and congratulated her. He was standing on top of the fly bridge and was ready to jump again headfirst into the beautiful, clear, calm water of Maunalua Bay. His 3-year-old brother, Mark, was in hot pursuit. ■ The sparkling waters of Kailua Bay invite a variety of ocean-sport enthusiasts to enjoy their favorite pastimes. Recently, Kalani Valenzuela, a spear fisherman, patrolled a section of the bay just off the Hulihe‘e Palace and shot a fierce prize in 15 feet of water. Searching for dinner with his! diving partner, Jack Kanohai, Valenzuela swam to a familiar coral reef patched with sand. Kanohai was the first to spot a 20-lb kaku lazing motionless in one of the sandy spaces. Because of barracuda’s reputation, Valenzuela usually swims clear of these species, especially the schooled ones. But, the napping fish presented too tempting a target to pass up. ■ Every year Don Morris takes his vacation and comes to Hawaii from Washington state to fish for two weeks with his brother, Bob, on Bob’s 24’ Searay, the MALOLO II. This year was not unusual. Don did get in a little earlier, but he didn’t find any less fish. On one day, Bob and Don took five mahimahi from a net in the second valley. They followed with some otaru the next day, and then they caught ono and more mahimahi the next day. No one expected Don to get two large marlin in two consecutive days, but he did. And he caught the last one during the Kaneohe Yacht Club Invitational. Don and Bob’s two-day catch consisted of a 343-pounder and a tournament-winning 453-pounder. Don is in Fish…

■ Rangiroa’s popularity as a fishing spot all started four years ago when a group of fishermen from Tahiti and Bora Bora decided to go to Rangiroa to do some heavy spinning one weekend. The group consisted of Monty Brown, general manager of the Hotel Bora Bora, Steve Fearon, construction manager of the Hotel Bora Bora, Lionel Kennedy, resident manager of the Hotel Tahara‘a in Tahiti, and Craig Whitney of Bloody Mary’s Seafood Restaurant in Bora Bora. ■ The markers on the field looked like the numbers on a golf driving range. They started at 400 feet and moved out in 50-foot increments—450, 500, 550, 600, 650, 700, 750 and 800. “They must be kidding,” I thought to myself, “800 feet. You could catch ono from the shoreline if you could cast 800 feet in Hawaii” Then I read the information Stren distributed about their National Longcasting Tournament Series. A guy named Ron Arra from Massachusetts won the regionals in his area with a cast of 737 feet 11 inches, a new American record! This I had to see. The Stren Longcasting Tournament has few rules. ■ The 1985 Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament will be remembered as a year of catch quality, not quantity. Compared to the 1984 HIBT catch of 112 qualifying marlin, the 24 marlin boated in Kona’s annual billfish extravaganza held in mid-August this year would seem to be a disappointing catch. Many pointed out it was the smallest catch since 1964! But it’s not so disappointing if you compare the sizes of the fish. In 1984 over 80 percent of the billfish taken weighed less than 200 lbs. This August, anglers grappled with fish that had a mean weight in excess of 350 lbs, and five of the catch exceeded 400 lbs. Last year only a rare qualifier topped the 400-lb mark. When pulled through the water, they form a large bubble around the lure. The bubble continuously forms and breaks, streaming a white water trail behind the lure. The sight and sound of the turbulence attracts fish by arousing their curiosity and provoking them to strike. Bubblers also alter the action of straight running lures. With a bubbler, the lures veer back and forth from side to side, pop to the surface and plunge down a foot or two. Several companies manufacture bubblers, but you can make your own very simply. ■ In Lahaina Town the boats were kept busy enough during July to co out and catch some nice fish.: Capt. Craig Forrest aboard the AERIAL II picked off three ono that weighed from 25 to 35 lbs each, and Capt. Dave Russell and Capt. Gary Bingham on the AERIAL III nabbed a 28-lb spearfish. The SEAWOLF brought in several mahimahi in the 25- to 30-lb range, an 80-lb whitetip shark and the sixth heaviest; marlin caught during July, a 420-pounde-r angled by Ron File. TRISHA ANN Strikes Huge Billfish ■ The largest marlin taken from the Wai‘anae Coast during the month of July tipped the scale at 825 lbs. It was captured by Ed Yasuda and his brother Bob while they were fishing on Ed’s 16’ Glas Ply three miles off Makua Valley on July 5. The billfish was hooked just after noon, and Bob spent the next two hours tussling with the massive beauty. There were periods during the battle when these two fishermen wondered if they had the marlin on the end of the line or the marlin had them on the end of the line.
