■ The small number of fish caught in the 7th Annual Wahine Jackpot held on Halloween in Lahaina, Maui, did little to dull the enthusiasm of the 39 teams of ladies participating in the event this year. Although only seven boats landed fish, the weather was beautiful. Lahaina women who have fished in previous tourneys Lave usually been unlucky enough to hit bad weather on their fishing day. This year it was a great treat. Another marvelous plus was that the tournament date had been rescheduled so that everyone could be there on Halloween. Lahaina town goes right off the wall every year with some of the most original costumes west of New Orleans. ■ Renditions of “Let’s all go to the Dairy Queen. Scrumptdillyitious!” rasped over the CB on a clear, crisp “Sundae” morning at Kewalo Basin. The charter boats were packed with Dairy Queen people from around the world, here in Hawaii for their annual convention. I decided to go along and get the “scoop” firsthand. Flying fish glided away from both sides of the sampan as we set a true course through the mild swells. An ‘iwa bird spiraled down into view and everyone was sure we would soon have a strike. The KUU HUAPALA was trolling several yards away on our port side. “Hana pa‘a (hook up)!” crackled through the radio. ■ Aloha from the Valley Isle. November fishing looked like this in Lahaina Town: The AERIAL with Capt. Chris Rose and crew member Rich Newcomb landed a 38-lb spearfish and several mahimahi ranging from 15 to 35 lbs. The AERIAL II, skippered by Capt. Craig Forrest and crew member Kirt Peterson, landed some nice mahimahi during the month. The BALI HAI brought in a nice 48-lb spearfish for angler Dale Grinwis of Colorado. Dale was fishing with Capt. Jim Callis and crew member Mike Richmond. The BROADBILL, now being skippered by Al Price (formerly captain of the CHARGER), landed a 150-lb marlin for angler Ralph Johansen. Helping out as crew was Tim Klob. The EXACT landed a 55-lb striper for Mike Deakin from Los Angeles. Mike was fishing with Co-capt.…

■ Dad always carried a club to protect us as we went lamalama (night torching). As a young boy. I wondered. “What is there to fear at peaceful Huakini Bav?” I quickly found out the reason for carrying the club on our ‘ohana excursion as we moved to a small cove called the point. In order to reach the point, we had to pass under a grove of hala trees. Luckily. Dad led the group with his torch, for as he moved near one of the hala trees, a snakelike creature dropped before his feet. He started swinging his club fiercely until the animal wiggled down ro the nearby ocean. ■ This is the first of a monthly column I will be writing for HAWAII FISHING NEWS on the subject of modern marine electronics. I will try to cover topics of universal interest. Any input from readers suggesting specific areas of interest will be much appreciated. For several reasons, much of what I write will seem directed toward fishermen. ■ Keehi Marine, Inc., which purchased the former Amfac Marine in April 1984, has now also purchased the former Hawaiian Tunapackers Shipyard in Kewalo Basin. The purchase was completed on November 5, 1984, Kewalo Shipyard, as it will now be called, began dry-docking boats at that time. On November 7, CORSAIR, a 74’ aku boat, was the first boat to. be hauled. Charlie Pires and Frank Rice, two of the partners of Keehi Marine, Inc., were on hand to haul the lines. The same yard men who have been at Tunapackers for many years continued in the same capacities as they always have. ■ Last year was an excellent time for fishing along the Kona Coast—The Blue Marlin Capital of the World—where the super-sized marlin are caught. People came from many parts of the world to spend their fishing vacations at the famous fishing village of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. As we review our reports we also notice that nearly every state on the mainland had some groups of fishermen and fishing ladies that caught fish here during 1984. Direct flights from the mainland have given tourists some extra time to spend sport fishing here, because time saved on a direct flight to Kona on the Big Island can be used for more fishing. ■ I’m not sure who got the worst deal for November—the turkeys that had to face Thanksgiving or we turkeys who still insisted on fishing hard during the month. If catching fish was the only priority of being on the lake, there certainly wasn’t much incentive. I’ve never seen it this bad for so long. I hate to sound negative, but I’m afraid that even with optimum water conditions, it will take several years for the fishing to return to normal. For the first half of the month the water was still holding at the 42-foot mark with oxygen all the way to the bottom. Then we had a small rise, and the aerator was turned off for a few days. ■ During the past five years, we members of Ultra-Light Hawaii have been traveling to the outer islands in search of that special time and place when we would be able to enjoy a fantastic battle with good-sized game fish. Many of the members have either done it once or twice, but some of them are still waiting. ■ A 572-lb tournament record marlin highlighted the 1984 Lahaina Jackpot Tournament held November 1-3 out of tiny Lahaina harbor on Maui. This largest billfish ever landed in the Lahaina tourney was captured by angler Jerome Muramoto, Matt Kahapea and Cliff Mehrtens fishing aboard the 24-foot Mosquito AH TINA of the Aiea Boat Club on O‘ahu. These three men were fishing four miles out between Pelekuna and Wailau valleys off the northshore of Moloka‘i during the second day of the competition. Jerome was in the stern of the boat when something hit a fish head blue and silver lure on the center rod.
