Winter-type severe weather in Hawaiian waters begins this month. Some of the worst weather in the Islands has occurred in November. It is likely that there will be some bad weather days during the month. Mariners are cautioned that the change from good weather to bad weather can be fast. The following are the possible bad weather conditions that can occur: high northwest swell and surf, gusty trade winds, heavy rains, strong southwest Kona winds, squalls, thunderstorms and waterspouts. Southerly surf is down while high swell and surf activity from the northwest direction greatly increase. ■ ‘Ohana fishing trips to Huakini Bay are among the most enjoyable memories of my young days in the 1950s. A caravan of three or four jeeps and trucks filled with food, clothing, and shelter frequently traveled the rugged Pi‘ilani Highway. The vehicles kicked up the dust along the way as we silently headed toward our fishing destination. We traveled quietly because Dad and Uncle Frank believed that the fish would hear us coming if we talked and laughed. What price bracket did you head for?’” Carl Newell recounted in his comfortable Glendale, California, office. “I didn’t do it that way, although that’s the way a businessman would have done it. ■ It is easy to develop a sense of security when you are standing on the Kailua pier next to a tournament-qualifying 615½-lb Pacific blue marlin, even if it is only the first day of the event. Rick Losey certainly felt secure. Rick had a new job and a new boss, and he had just helped the Arcadia Hookers boat a fish that looked like a sure money winner in the 6th Annual Chuck Machado’s Luau Jackpot Fishing Tournament. National Marine Manufacturers Association ■ In passing the Omnibus Budget Deficit Reduction Bill (H.R. 4170) on June 27, Congress also voted to return each year to outdoor enthusiasts $97 million-plus taxes paid by the nation’s boaters and fishermen. Federal taxes paid on fuel used in recreational boats plus excise taxes paid on fishing tackle and related products will now be collected in a special fund and will pay for programs to enhance the nation’s recreational fisheries and fund a host of boating programs. It means that, beginning this fall, funds will start being spent to produce better fishing and make boating safer and easier. ■ Among the venomous bony fishes of the world, the Scorpaenids (i.e. the family Scorpaenidae) are Considered the most dangerous, both in the number and in the severity of injuries produced. The Scorpaenidae are a large and diverse family of fish consisting of about 30 genera and over 350 species, at least 80 of which have caused venomous injuries in humans. Because of their complex anatomy they are difficult to identify and classify; however, all members of this family have a bony plate extending across the cheek from the eye to the gill cover. As a result, they are sometimes referred to as the “mail-cheeked fishes.” Scorpaenids are widely distributed throughout the world, with the greatest number of species being found in the tropical Indian and Pacific Oceans. ■ Aloha from the Valley Isle. While I was in Santa Barbara, California, for part of September, I had the opportunity to do some bottom fishing and some net fishing. We caught some nice yellowtail, bonito and even some mahimahi. Yes, I did say mahi, or dorado for you West Coasters. We also caught a nice 465-lb broadbill swordfish and assorted sharks. ■ November fishing action in Hawaii depends on the weather. In some years, November is a gentle month providing perfect circumstances for a wide range of fishing activities. Most Novembers, however, are marked by high winds, strong surf and heavy seas. November storms include some of the most violent on record. Even in the most turbulent of Novembers, peace breaks out, offering interludes of cooperative seas. Harsh conditions can intrude rapidly, however; boaters and fishermen need to be prepared to scurry for cover. Certain lee areas are scarcely touched by severe weather, on the other hand, and offer good conditions throughout the month. Kaua‘i’s devastating hurricane of 1982, for example, was only lightly felt on the Big Island. Kona readers, perusing November weather forecasts, often wonder what the fuss is…

■ The article on “Foreign-Built Boats Restricted from Charter and Commercial Fishing,” which was printed in the April 1984 issue of HAWAII FISHING NEWS, stirred one reader to call in with a dispute. This reader said he owned a foreign-built sportfishing boat that the Coast Guard had documented and he had been informed that, although he could not sell the fish he caught on the boat, he could charter the boat if he came back to the same harbor he left from. This reader also said that he had read in a Coast Guard manual that “trolling is not considered fishing,” and then he mentioned “a voyage to nowhere.” With these bits of information I returned to the Coast Guard office, where J. ■ To rephrase an old Johnny Cash song, “How high’s the water, Papa?” “Forty-four feet and dropping.” That’s the lowest it’s been since 1976, and with no rain predicted it’s sure to get worse before conditions improve. Thanks to a couple of small showers in the mountains, I have a little more time before I have to move my boat to the basin. At one point there was barely enough water behind my house to float the boat. Luckily, just as 1 was ready to move it, the water rose two feet to give me a slight reprieve. ■ It sure got good toward the end! Reports from recent Hawaiian tournaments suggest a banner year for fishing in Hawaii. In 1984 there have been record numbers of entries, record catches and great angling achievements—and there are still more to come! First George Molholm’s Golden Marlin Tournament came off with triple its first year’s enrollment and a payoff of $130,000. Then Chuck Machado held his 6th Annual Chuck Machado’s Luau Jackpot Fishing Tournament. Eight fish over 500 lbs were brought in and better than 100 game fish were caught between the 115-odd teams fishing his four-day extravaganza. Then the Lanai Rendezvous reported in with a new record attendance of some 65 boats that choked tiny Manele Harbor over Discovery Day Weekend. This event saw record catches in everything but…

■ An intriguing question came to us from Henry Ho of Honolulu. He asked, “Exactly what do you use a double line for?” Before you shore fishermen switch to another article figuring that double lines are no concern of yours, let me holler “Wait!” Sure, I know that a double line is the finishing touch on a big game trolling outfit. But many of the reasons a double line works for trailers are also advantages in shore fishing. Finishing off your casting line by doubling back is a good way to hang onto more fish regardless of how you fish. So give the idea a look. ■ It is with regret that we note the BEEFEATER has made its final voyage. The popular 42-foot charter fishing boat caught fire and sank off Lana‘i. The BEEFEATER was returning from a tournament in Kona with Capt. Dudley Worthy and mate Charles Naone on board. Both were plucked unhurt from the water by a passing boat, the KAHUNA KAI. It is not known at this time what caused the fire. Meanwhile at Kewalo Basin, two commercial fishing boats went aground near Point Panic. The 50-foot JAE SUK became disabled near the harbor entrance and her 30-foot sister ship, the MANTA III, came to the rescue with a towline. Unfortunately, MANTA III became entangled when the towline wrapped around her propellers. Both boats then drifted into the reef. The MANTA…

■ On a bright and beautiful Wednesday morning, brothers Jimmy and Johnny Carvalho along with their Uncle Louie Hookano had their dad’s boat, the CATHRINE C, out for a day of fishing. The three of them were enjoying a super terrific day. While Johnny took it easy on the roof enjoying the sun, Uncle Louie opened a cold one and relaxed on the fishbox. He hoped the first fish would be some aku for pupus. Jimmy, meanwhile, noticed the boat was just Kahuku of the water tank at Punalu‘u and fairly close to land. Suddenly, he spotted a flock of birds working the water just ahead. “Aku,” he thought. “All right, just what we need for bait.” Suddenly, the reel jumped to life and Johnny jumped down to clear lines…

■ September was an excellent month for fishing along the beautiful Kona Coast. Several 500-, 600-, and 700-lb marlin were brought in to the pier scales throughout the month. Blue Marlin Capital’s Catches Of Over 500 Pounds For September 1984 The charter boat ANNETTA, skippered by Capt. Del Cannon, had the largest marlin weighed in during September at Kailua-Kona pier. On September 11, angler Al Pittman from Louisiana reeled in the giant 758lb Pacific blue marlin while fishing aboard the ANNETTA. The charter boat HUMDINGER came to the pier scales on September 5 with four marlin flags flying high. The marlin weighed 193 lbs, 172 lbs, 152 lbs and 131 lbs. Here is a photograph that shows Diane Taniguchi and our prize rainbow trout of ‘84. It was hooked by Mike “Bushman” Lau and weighed in at a little shy of 2½ lbs. It was about 18” long. We also landed a 1½ and a 1-lb rainbow. It wasn’t one of the best pears for fishing, but the beautiful surroundings always make it an adventure worth remembering. Can’t wait till next pear!
