Tagged Striped Marlin Recaptured Near Hawaii
■ The local commercial longline vessel TYPHOON, owned by Keith Colburn and operated by Capt. Jim Carson, recaptured on June 3, 1984, less than 60 miles east of Maui, a striped marlin that was tagged by a sport fisherman off California in September 1983. During its nine-month liberty, the marlin traveled a straight-line distance of 1,980 nautical miles, or about 7 nautical miles per day, to Maui.
The marlin, which weighed an estimated 130 lbs when tagged, was initially caught about 12 miles southeast of Santa Rosa Island off the coast of California by sport angler Richard E.
