Tagged Striped Marlin Recaptured Near Hawaii ■ The local commercial longline vessel TYPHOON, owned by Keith Colburn and operated by Capt. Jim Carson, recaptured on June 3, 1984, less than 60 miles east of Maui, a striped marlin that was tagged by a sport fisherman off California in September 1983. During its nine-month liberty, the marlin traveled a straight-line distance of 1,980 nautical miles, or about 7 nautical miles per day, to Maui. The marlin, which weighed an estimated 130 lbs when tagged, was initially caught about 12 miles southeast of Santa Rosa Island off the coast of California by sport angler Richard E. ■ Many of the best new ideas in rod building were on display at the International Sportsman’s Exposition in San Francisco earlier this year. What impressed me most were the many examples of simple devices hmatuer rod-builders can make for themselves to make home rod-building simple and easy. Along with this article, we are showing some diagrams that feature several variations on jigs for rod wrapping and finish curing. Though motorized rod wrappers were much in evidence, these aren’t as essential to the home craftsman as the motorized curing “lathe.” Today’s modern high-build polymers are thick and syrupy. ■ In just. eight years the annual Kauai Easter Seal Fishing Tournament has become the undisputed granddaddy of all fishing contests on the island. With over 500 participants annually, it is undoubtedly THE most prestigious tournament on Kaua‘i. If you’re a winner, you’ve beaten the best. As in past contests the competition this year was as sharp as a fish filleting knife. The bad weather notwithstanding, contestants went all out to beat the field. The results were some truly outstanding catches. In the papio division (10 lbs or less), Lance Tada just beat out Doug Inouye with a fish that weighed 9 lbs 6 oz to Doug’s 9-pounder. ■ Aloha ke Akua from the Friendly Isle of Moloka‘i. I hope everyone has been getting their fair share of the big ones that didn’t get away! It looks like the action has been steadily increasing all along the islands, at least according to all the reports that have been filtering in. It looks like a newcomer to deep-sea fishing has recently joined the ranks here on Moloka‘i. Clarence and Dianne Adachi recently purchased a used Wellcraft and have been trying it out for table fish. Clarence doesn’t have any heavy-duty trolling equipment yet, so he’s been dragging handlines behind his boat. ■ The $30,000 first prize promised by the 7th Annual Kona Gold Jackpot Tournament was likely the incentive for most of the 170 plus teams entered in the 1984 version of Hawaii’s largest fishing competition. But not for the eventual winners. Before the competition, Gerry Macadam said: “We’re only in this thing for the fun.” Speaking for the team fishing on the tiny skiff FISHBOX, he continued: “We’ve done well before (6th in ‘82), and, we’re just going fishing to have a good time.” And so they did. ■ Suppose you planned a tournament season and the fish never came? That is a scenario that some pessimists argue is right around the corner, but it was also a reality of the early tournament season 1984. There were some big fish to be sure, and no one was too worried when the first two tournaments of 1984 produced lighter catches than expected, but when the big tourneys like the Pokai Bay Bonanza and the Kona Gold reported marginal catches then people began to speculate—why? Kona…Blue Marlin Capital Of The World! ■ Many of the Kona boats are bringing in great catches of ahi (tuna), spearfish, striped marlin and Pacific blue marlin and also a few black marlin and sailfish. We had 22 marlin over the 300-lb size—eight of these were of the 400-lb size, five were the 500-lb plus size and two marlin were over 600 lbs. The captains are arriving at the pier scales with multiple catches, and some very large ahi over the 200-1b size are being weighed. One of the largest was brought in on the charter boat OMEGA, June 2, by Capt. Klaus. It weighed 241 lbs. The angler was Bill May. ■ Waianae’s first good invasion of giant Allison tuna arrived just in time to whet the whistles of all those anglers who were fishing in the Pokai Bay Bonanza Jackpot fishing tournament. The boats that had been in dry dock all winter are now back out on the high seas hunting ahi, and the parking lot is practically full on weekends. During the Bonanza tournament, although the ahi were here, the big blues apparently decided to take a vacation. Not one single blue was landed during the three days. However most of the Pacific blues caught before and since the tournament were in the 500-plus range.
