Except for gusty trade winds, the weather outlook in Hawaiian waters is good. Higher than normal southerly swell and surf are to be expected. It is unlikely that strong Kona winds, thunderstorms and heavy rains will occur. ■ It all started rather simply. The decision was made over a couple of beers at one of Kona’s favorite watering holes, Huggo’s: “Let’s have a ladies’ tournament; the tournaments are all for men!” That humble beginning, seven years ago, grew into Hawaii’s, and likely the world’s, largest women’s fishing tournament, the Kona A’Lure Hawaiian Wahine Fishing Tournament. This year it was as spectacular as ever! The event begins with social opportunity unlike that offered by most fishing tournaments in Hawai‘i. The briefing for 250 women in the ballroom of the Hotel King Kamehameha is a complete party with pupus, liquid refreshment and an auction that recycles some of the rarest and most coveted fishing T-shirts on the planet. 1. Capt. Bob Rochetta does not trust crimped nylon leaders. He says a knotted endloop is stronger. Big fish, he says, prove it. And Bob catches big fish. He makes his daily living chartering for giant bluefin tuna off New England. Bob says the strongest way to finish off a leader is with a Flemish eye, tied carefully so that both strands contact the ring to which the loop is attached (don’t let the strands cross each other and the ring), followed by a surgeon’s knot. ■ Rough water and mahimahi went hand in hand as spring came to O‘ahu. My thanks to Capt. Mike DeRego for the following information: I am told that there have been only about three days of smooth water since the ides of March, but that didn’t stop the Kewalo fleet from heading out to the Penguin Bank. “Toots” Tsutahara on the KONO led the way catching 16 mahimahi and assorted ahi and ono on one Saturday when he discovered a cargo net. The VIKING with Capt. Ray Corder and the MAGGIE JOE with Capt. DeRego matched each other’s figures over the weekend with nine mahimahi on Saturday and seven on Sunday. Captains Darrin Oshiro, Russell Tanaka and Rick Lipton each scored six on the TINA REI, MARY I and COREENE…

■ Depending from whose viewpoint you look at the lake, there’s conflicting emotions about the recent fishing. The biologists are elated, the fishermen are disgusted, and I fall somewhere in between. I just can’t get enthused about fishing rising water. Past experience has shown that the cold inflow seems to put the fish in shock. Inflow we certainly had. All month long the water was slowly rising, and toward the last week it got serious. In total, there was about an 18-foot rise, not enough to put it over the dam, but one more good rain will do it. Everyone agrees that this was what the fish needed, but it would be nice if we could catch one sometime. Bass season opened April 1st, but someone forgot to inform the…

■ Many Konans missed personally viewing the fiery spectacle of Madam Pele’s recent dance down the northeast flank of Mauna Loa, but all living on the southwest side of the Big Island were well aware of her performance. For 21 days, a cloud of volcanic emissions, appearing golden and rosy under pre-dawn illumination, drifted across the “Saddle” and tucked itself into the lee formed under the shield of Hualalai and Mauna Loa. The ‘vog’ was trapped for days, cutting visibility along the coast. The famous Kona sunsets, non-existent a few evenings, resembled L.A. during a 3rd Stage Smog Alert. On Thursday, April 12, the eruption quieted, and a breeze picked up from the southwest to disburse the pollution. By Saturday morning, the sun was shining brightly on the fishing grounds…

■ Several hefty marlin were caught along our leeward shore this past month as were Allison tuna, mahimahi, smaller billfish and pounds and pounds of aku and shibiko tuna. With this favorite food of big billfish abounding all along our coastline, it is no wonder that there has been some big billfish action. As we go into tournament time again, we predict that this may be one of the best fishing sessions yet. Wai‘anae’s largest billfish of 1984 to date was towed into the boat harbor alongside the PAPA-JO, a 19-foot Reinell, on April 23. Tony DeRamos, Bruce Stupplebeen and Deano Souza had left the harbor that morning and hooked up to a big 42-pound ono on the way out. The three men then worked the area about seven miles…

■ There is this old saying, still popular in chauvinist circles: “Ladies first.” And that is the way it is in Hawaii’s 1984 tournament schedule. The year began with the Hawaii Yacht Club’s Annual Senoritas’ Tournament, which drew 42 teams and a Small Craft Warning weekend once again. Then the Kona A’Lure Hawaiian Wahine Fishing Tournament blossomed with its 7th annual running on May 1. You’ll find coverage of those two great events elsewhere in this issue. The month rolled on with the newly dated Pokai Bay Bonanza Jackpot, which was closely followed by the Western Sports Tournaments’ wahine event, the Golden Goddess, and finally by the Kona Gold Jackpot, Hawaii’s largest fishing event, which wrapped up the month. How the skipper maneuvers the boat during a fish fight will depend on the fish, the angler, the gear and the sea—but it will be determined by what the boat can and can NOT do. HAWAII FISHING NEWS announces a contest for youngsters 12 years and under to name our O‘ahu monk seal. Aunty Helena vividly remembers that that was the most frequent command she heard from the kupuna (elders) as they attempted to chase her away from their adult conversation. The kupuna were perceptive of Helena’s keen interest in their conversation, even when they spoke in the Hawaiian language, so they attempted to keep her at a distance to prevent her from hearing some of the sacred things they discussed. The kupuna made every effort to conceal their discussions about fishing and other matters from Helena, but they soon became discouraged by her persistence and eventually invited her into the discussions at a young age. Out of courtesy we will withhold the name of the magazine, which published the picture without noticing the errors. We found seven deadly sins. Here they are, beginning with the worst. 1. The ono is gaffed in the tail, the very worst place. Ono should be gaffed in the cheeks to maintain control. Gaffing the tail not only exposes the crew to sharp fangs, but it drives a fish crazy—the tail is a very sensitive area. 2. The gaff is far too long and unwieldy. Use a 5- to 7-foot gaff. You’ll have more control, and you won’t knock your partner’s teeth out with the butt of the gaff. 3. The gaff is upside down…

■ Both March and April have now passed, and the Northshore has been blessed with the passing of only a single ahi school resulting in a handful of fish in the box for a couple lucky boats. So the big question is “Where’s the AHI?” No doubt when this article comes to print this question will have beer, answered. Every year the fishermen hope for an early ahi run, but we’ll take them whenever they show The first sign of the tuna schools was the presence of some big marlin. Capt. Dave Borgman aboard the MOKULEA made the most of this longnose action when he landed big blues ranging in size from 300 to 351 lbs on March 15, 20 and 22. Pursuant to Chapter 123 (Section 13-123-4) Rules Regulating Game Mammal Hunting, the Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife announced today that the annual public hunting season for feral goats on Kauai, scheduled for August 4 to September 23, 1984 will be suspended. Recent surveys of the Na Pali Coast and Waimea Canyon areas have indicated that populations of goats have increased, but are still too low to support hunting this year. The closure is a conservation measure to permit herd increases. The areas to be closed are Hunting Units A, B, and E, which include all public lands open to hunting in the Puu Ka Pele Forest Reserve and those portions of the Na Pali-Kona Forest Reserve and Na Pali Coast State Park that lie…
