Aside from Rich and myself, our group consisted of Dr. James and Donna Wong, George Silva, Ken Muraoka, Steve Fountain of McCully Bicycle, Carl Hamamoto, Bob Dang, Jake Ah Sing, and the Big Bwana of Kilauea, Kaua‘i, Jack Gushiken. Steve, Carl, Bob and Jake had recently been to Christmas Island and were looking forward to comparing the fishing there to Fiji. On the other hand, Jack was on cloud 9 because he had just been notified that his 115-lb halibut, caught at Shelter Island Lodge, had been certified as a world record on 20-lb test line by the IGFA. For this intitial, shake down cruise we had a group of very experienced fishermen.
