■ Spring is approaching according to the calendar but in Hawaiian waters winter-type weather can still appear in March. But there will be more good weather days than bad weather days. There is always the possibility of the occurrence of any of the following severe weather events: cold front with strong Kona winds, upper trough with heavy rain, gusty trade winds and high northwest wave and surf. Trade winds should be present on more than half of the days in March with the possibility of about 8 to 14 days of gusty trades. Northwest swell activity should be noticeably less. There may be about 5 days of high surf greater than 10 feet along the north shores. There’s still a chance of surf greater than 25 feet high at Sunset…

Quite understandably, in discussions of scuba diving, the emphasis is usually on sport, adventure and enjoyment. The pleasures of being underwater are enhanced by the very social nature of sport divers, who appear to enjoy talking about diving almost as much as the diving itself. The average sport diver using scuba believes a diver in a hard hat is under considerably more stress, both physical and emotional, than a scuba diver. A working scuba diver can move freely, is untethered, carries his own air supply and is less encumbered by heavy gear. Nevertheless, in its Diving Manual, the U.S. Navy recognizes that the advantages of scuba are also potential problems. ■ The first days of January had a nice list of good-sized fish. The first marlin for 1984 was boated by 10 a.m., January 1, and was brought to the Kailua-Kona town pier before noon. The angler of the 306-lb Pacific blue marlin was Susan Qualls. She was fishing with Capt. Lew Mims aboard the charter boat BILL COLLECTOR. On January 2, the first marlin of over 500 lbs was caught on the boat SEA GENIE. The Pacific blue marlin weighed 533 lbs. The angler, Lindy Bacchetti, was fishing with Capt. Bill Casey. ■ On a recent trip traveling around the island of Maui, my wife and I played tour guide for our Honolulu friends Scooter and Cookie Souza along with David and Sylvia Kaiwi. ■ I wasn’t loaded for bear as the other anglers were; I had come along just to kind of recharge my emotional batteries after a severe week at work. But I was fully intending on taking full advantage of the nice warm sunshine and good fishing waters of South Kona. The rod I had selected was my favorite GSP1084 with my Penn #550 spinning reel. After stuffing my pockets full of Boone jigs I was off to see if I could harass some good-sized ulua. I spent several hours fruitlessly casting and dropping a jig in some heart-stopping spots, which, I was certain, had fish just under the surface waiting to pounce on my dodging jig. But no such luck. Ropoma Committee Elaine Demian reported that about 10 to 15 Fish Aggregate Devices (FADS) were placed about 50 yards seaward from the sunken ship, MAHI in 90 feet of water off Malli point. The buoy portion of the FADs were about 30 feet off the bottom and, therefore, 60 feet below the surface. The life expectancy of the FADs is about eight years under ordinary conditions. Because the MAHI has increased the fish population in the area, it will be interesting to see how many more fish will be attracted to the area because of the FADs. If you have ever fished a tournament in Hawai‘i, or inquired about one in the past, or read HAWAII FISHING NEWS religiously, you have likely been deluged with details about Hawaii’s 1984 tournament season. It is hard upon us! Western Sports Tournaments Inc., the tournament management team headed up by Bob Jablonski and George Molholm in Kona, have already sent out their tournament information flyer for 1984 complete with mail-in form. It details their big three tournaments for 1984—the Golden Goddess and Kona Gold Jackpot in late May and the Kona Ahi Tournament in mid-July. ■ Aloha from the friendly isle of Moloka‘i. I hope all you fishermen out there have been successful so far in 1984. There haven’t been many reports of anything happening fishing-wise on Moloka‘i as of late, due (I feel) to the really weird weather conditions. I received a call from Capt. Chris Lightfoot of the charter boat ALELE II last night. He reported the first “clean sweep” of the year for Moloka‘i! He was out on a half-day charter and was trolling the area of the late L-buoy, when he had a double marlin strike, landing a baby blue. A little later and a few miles farther out, he started getting attacked by ahi in the 25- to 30-lb size. It was funny though, he said, because there weren’t any…

Dear Chuck, We usually go fishing but on Sunday, November 27, 1983, we went to Hawaii Kai to catch crabs. Instead I caught a 2½-lb palani. ■ Aloha everybody. If the beginning of 1984 is any indication, it looks as if Lana‘i should be in for a year with plenty of seafood kau kau and good fish stories. With the trade winds giving way to the light and variable, or Kona, conditions we’ve been experiencing, the chance to dive Lana‘i’s windward coastline has been fun as well as rewarding. John Keawe poked a 28-lb ulua and some papio on a shoreline dive somewhere east of Ka‘ena Point. While on a north shore surfing safari, Capt. Ted Kellogg and myself also enjoyed great skindiving after discovering absolutely flat conditions for surfing but perfect for spearfishing. ■ Showings of the film “Salmon Spectacular” are being organized to benefit the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Hawaii. The Association is a private, nonprofit organization, which a group of parents whose children had cerebral palsy established to make sure needed services would be available to all people with cerebral palsy. The Association is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.
