■ It’s still winter but February’s weather is normally less severe than January’s. Good weather will prevail during the majority of the days in the month, but bad weather periods can cause problems: gusty trade winds, high northwest swell and surf, cold front with thunderstorms and gusty winds, upper trough and Kona low with thunderstorms and heavy rain. The fast and sometimes unexpected appearance of these strong winds in local waters should be considered by those planning activities in the water. Wintertime high northwest swell and surf action is gradually winding down. ■ Good news tournament types—the Hawaiian Invitational Allison Tuna Tournament (better known as the HIATT) is back! After its 1983 absence (due to an apparent lack of interest), tournament director Winfred Ho and his Board of Governors have decided to bring back the 10-year-old event under a revised format. The first change is the name, which, although somewhat unwieldy, reflects the purpose of the reborn event. It is now the HIATT/Budweiser Scholarship Foundation Jackpot Tournament. Maintained from the old HIATT are the location for the event, Wai‘anae, the timing of the event (July 1114), and the light-tackle nature of the tournament (only 50-, 30- and 20-pound line classes will be allowed). ■ The month of December is usually an unpredictable time for deep-sea fishing on the Northshore. Most would say the lack of steady trade winds during this period would slow the fishing action. Others say the Kona or south winds bring floating debris, which can be easily found in the flat-waters. When this debris is located it can lead to some fantastic mahimahi catches. Such was the case with the MOKULEA this December. On December 14 the MOKULEA left Haleiwa harbor with owner Pete Glaser, Captain Dave Borgman, and crew Tona Vellalos aboard. ■ Hawaiian chiefs enjoyed competition in all types of activities including fishing. The following story could have taken place in any part of the Hawaiian archipelago because it was a common occurrence for an ali‘i (chief) to challenge his maka‘ainana (commoner) and kauwa (low-class of people). This is a story of a chief and his fishing companions who made bonito fishing their specialty. They were known throughout the land for their success in this sport. The chief and his companions were always watching the oceanside for fishermen who were catching aku (bonito). Council Activities Recompression Chamber The U of H, John A. Burns School of Medicine Hyperbaric Treatment Center, located at the U of H Look Laboratory at Kewalo Basin, has had a very busy year since its dedication on April 4, 1983. Since its opening through January 6, 1984, the Center has treated 34 divers for a total of 129 treatments, primarily for the bends. During the same period 211 treatments were administered to medical patients for medical conditions such as compromised skin grafts, carbon monoxide poisoning, gas gangrene, osteonecrosis, etc. It is well known that hyperbaric treatment is the primary mode of treatment for bends, but it is probably not widely known that it is the primary mode of treatment for gas gangrene and carbon monoxide poisoning. Veritably a surgical operation is being performed in two sections of the le’ward water line of the island of Oahu and through the consummation of it Honolulu harbor ultimately will have two “ears,” as it were, capable of caring for increased commerce at this port for many years to come. One part of this operation is that which will eventually make Kalihi basin a deep-water harbor, permitting the entrance and docking of seagoing craft of any draft which can be accommodated by the main channel. The other part is the work on Kewalo basin, Waikiki of the present harbor, where it is designed that within a very few years all fishing craft, lumber schooners and light-draft nitrate steamers will be provided berths. ■ The 1983 Hawaii Yacht Club and Waikiki Yacht Club co-sponsored Junior Fishing Tournament was held on December 4 and was considered a great success by all. This was a bottom fishing tournament held offshore Waikiki, and the weatherman delivered a perfect sunny day and flat ocean for our use. Very early Saturday morning, HYC was inundated by no less than 49 youngsters, wondering why they had to get up so early to go fishing. After a little confusion, all were assigned to one of the eight power boats and were given a bag lunch, sodas, fishing gear, and a few tips on how to catch the big ones. ■ Fishing in Kona in 1983 came to an exciting close as the last few days of December had some beautiful catches of Pacific blue marlin. On December 27, Capt. Jim Hunter on the LEI ALOHA weighed in a 691-lb marlin. Then on December 30, Capt. Gary Testa on the BILLFISHER II brought in a 749-lb Pacific blue marlin to the Kailua-Kona pier scales—it was the largest marlin for the month of December. On the following day, Capt. Reed Williams on the HOLIDA Y had a 600-lb marlin to the pier. The last marlin to arrive at the scales New Years Eve was on the KONA SUNRISE with Capt. Terry Dahl. It weighed 392 lbs. ■ Happily this report is being written back in Paradise. Couldn’t start the New Year without a visit to the sunny islands and got such a nice welcome home from my old buddies down at the Basin. Greg Cherry was the captain with the largest fish honors of 1983 here at Kewalo. His LYNELL landed a 754-pound blue marlin just 20 minutes outside of the harbor the day before New Year’s Eve. The fight started at 7:50 a.m. and ended at noon. Coached by mate Mike Soares, all six anglers on the boat took a turn at landing the fish.
