■ It has been a long time coming, but we finally got some of the action that should have been happening all summer. The water started dropping early in the month to drive the fish out of the grass, and the oxygen level moved up to the 10-foot level. At least under those conditions you’re confident that your lures are in fishy water. You couldn’t say there was any lure preference because the fish were hitting everything. ■ As I write this, the 1983 Hawaiian tournament season is just about to come to a close. Yet to fish are two of the most popular events in Hawai‘i—the Lahaina Wahine Tournament and the Lahaina Championship Jackpot Fishing Tournament, the event that started jackpot madness in Hawai‘i. At this sitting, those events look like they will have entry numbers equal to past years. And that raises an interesting point. As the year progressed, several tournament directors groused over the fact that tournament entries were dropping off because of the economy, other tournaments, too many jackpot tournaments and other ailments which they couldn’t understand. Fishing has been great every month of the year here in Kona, Hawaii. September saw 52 marlin weighing-in at over 200 lbs of these, 22 topped the 400-lb mark, and 12 went on to pass the 500-lb designation. ■ The ‘a‘ama crab appears to be the most popular crab to local residents because it is commonly found in many areas throughout the Hawaiian islands. It is generally agreed that the largest ‘a‘ama are found in areas where they exist without human interference. Many, however, are found in Waikiki and Diamond Head, which we know are places highly populated with people. For the most part, ‘a‘ama enjoy peaceful areas, preferably high cliffs, banks, large rocks, and spots off rugged terrain. The ‘a‘ama is a rock crab with a circular back and contains no lobes on its margin between the eyes. Each eye has a sharp spine that projects forward to protect it. Wai anae Catch Report ■ September arrived, school started again and many fishermen put their boats back in mothballs and stopped fishing. The trailer-boat parking lot at the Wai‘anae Boat Harbor in Poka‘i Bay looks practically deserted most of the time and will probably stay that way until (Tabu fishermen start hunting for table fish for New Year’s. Although there are still schools of frisky marlin around (and ahi with the porpoise), most fishermen are not taking advantage of the relatively uncrowded conditions around the fish aggregation buoys. Tensions were high and expectations were such that everyone was hoping to take the first-place prizes home.
