Hawaiian Waters Weather ■ For Hawaiian waters, summer is over and winter is approaching. October may preview the upcoming winter’s weather. There will be a greater variety of weather but the severity of bad weather has not reached its potential. The following are potentially bad weather events, listed in order of decreasing expected occurence: 1) northwest swell and surl, 2) gusty trade winds, 3) weak cold front, 1) Kona low. 5) north swell and surf, and 6) hurricane. Other than the northwest swell and surf, the expected frequencies of the other events are low. Northwest surf activity picks up while southerly surf is down. At Sunset Beach. O‘ahu. surf heights ranging from 6-to-10 feet can occur on about a third oi the days in October and surf to 15 feet…

A Definition Master planning is a comprehensive system of landuse planning that provides long-range guidance for the management, utilization, growth and development of land and water areas managed by the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS). Master planning forecasts important changes, additions and extension of the management and development of a refuge which are likely to become desirable and practicable in the future. ■ There are about 150 species of crabs listed as residents of Hawai‘i, but only 28 of them have Hawaiian names. Some are edible, others are poisonous, and the rest are common crabs which play a role in the balance of nature. Edible Crabs The papa‘i-kua-loa (long-backed crab) is commonly called the “Kona crab.” Other names for this crab are frog crab, red frog crab and spanner crab. This crab is momona (fat or full) with white meat and considered very delicious. The papa‘i-kua-loa can be found in sandy holes of the ocean ranging from 30 to 150 feet deep. At those depths, Kona crabs tend to dig their way into the sand backwards rather than sideways as most crabs do. Kona crabs are found in many areas including Hawai‘i,…

■ Today’s active scuba instructors seem to be caught in the grip of controversy over the true value of buddy breathing as a realistic technique for underwater rescue. The trend is most definitely toward the octopus regulator, and buddy breathing may very well be obsolete soon. Every major regulator manufacturer in the U.S. now manufactures, advertises and promotes an octopus model. Practically every resort underwater guide and every instructor conduction open-water training now wears an octopus rig as a regular part of his/her scuba dress. What’s wrong with buddy breathing? It has been an accepted method of diver rescue for about 30 years, so why is it suddenly undesirable? No one will argue the fact that buddy breathing has saved many, many lives over the past three decades. These rescues…

■ After four months of living on the desert, I resemble a Jackson Browne song which says “…there’s a longdistance lonely that is rolling out over the desert floor.” You can imagine my delight, therefore, when I talked to Capt. Dick Sloggett and he told me that he’d had Tucsonans out on the KAHUNA KAI and that they’d landed a marlin. I contacted the lucky anglers and found out that, as far as Arizona people go, they are really into fishing. Sanford Bennett is a physician who still believes in Family Practice. ■ Aloha once again from the land of pineapple. The fishing in August didn’t exactly produce any world records. The aku were there, but the usually abundant grounds around the island just weren’t holding much else. Our fishermen hunting aku came in with full coolers of fish ranging from small 1- to 2-lb kind to 5 to 8-lb varieties. Working out of Manele and the lighthouse grounds, Kazu “Skipjack” Masada, Al Alboro aboard HUSTLER, and Adolpho Sanchez on the ROAD RUNNER all made respectable showings. Weekend fisherman “Wave Rider” Fujie on board his HOLU NALU also scored stacks of aku, two ono weighing in at 20 and 23 lbs, and a pair of 15-lb mahimahi caught at the new K-buoy. Lahaina ■ In the late afternoon and after a long successful charter Capt. Dave Walker and crewman Rick Medenwald of the HINATEA were heading home when they spotted a pile of birds and some splashing water. Their hearts and adrenaline began pumping as they saw the size of the fish making the water excited. Dave figured they were in ahi heaven, but to their surprise they boated several 24-lb aku. During the month they also landed three spearfish and several ono. Also during the month several of Maui’s boat captains and crews were in Kona for the HBT and HIBT. ■ It has been a year of tournaments not quite living up to their norm, nor to the expectations of their directors and promoters. Several tournaments ran with entries a good deal lower than expected, and several tournaments were actually canceled for lack of interest. There have been a number of theories espoused as to why that may be so, with the recession and the economy being the most common. With the GOLDEN MARLIN TOURNAMENT just over, it is interesting to reflect on what the outer limits of tournament entry fees are. It features an international airport, fine hotels at reasonable prices, a casino, great museums and recreational opportunities of every imaginable kind. Wai‘anae Fish Count Due to the limited space available and the large number of fish caught, catch reports are limited to tuna over 100-lbs and billfish of any size, any species. ■ The name of the game in fishing during the month of August has been LIVE BAITING around the fish aggregation buoys in our Wai‘anae waters. Every year about this time, Pacific blue billfish (usually in the 100- to 350-pound range) invade our leeward territory in abundance. Since the advent of these terrific buoys, the billfish seem to settle within a 4-mile radius of the anchored devices. ■ On August 19, 20 and 21, the Kane‘ohe Jackpot Fishing Tournament was held on the Windward Coast. This first-time venture was a great success and plans are in making for a second Kane‘ohe Jackpot Fishing Tournament next year. At 6:30 a.m. on Friday, 25 anxious boats were on the starting line and ready to fish. The morning broke clear and sunny with blue skies which stayed for all three days. The sound of Uncle Jake’s voice counting off the seconds to starting time increased the excitement and anxiety of a good day of fishing.
