■ Enjoy summer in Hawaiian waters. August is the warmest month over land and in the water. No Kona storms or cold fronts are expected. Replacing these two wintertime storms could be storms born over the warm tropical waters—tropical storms and hurricanes. August is the favored months for these storms. Over the past years, these storms have appeared in Hawaiian waters, so it will be prudent to listen to the National Weather Service marine forecasts before venturing into the water. Trade winds will be the common feature as they persist through the month. Expect about 5 to 10 days of gusty trade winds that can make the waters very rough. Northwest swell-and-surf activity is at the minimum, hut southerly surf could be higher than normal at times.…

■ A pusher plug is probably the easiest and least expensive way to get into offshore lure making. The pusher is an old style plug that has been made famous by Mr. H. Chee and others. It offers the beginning lure maker some flexibility for creating his own design as well as ensuring the completion of some “guaranteed catch” lures. The plastic film cans are the mold. They offer several advantages. The resins will not affect them or stick to them. They come with a leak-proof cap and, most important, the center line is clearly marked by a dot on both the cap and bottom (see illustration). ■ Live-baiting wins big game fishing battles. For proof, look to the Kona Gold Jackpot Fishing Tournament. Sixteen of the 17 money catches were made on live bait. That’s research very appropriate to this tournament fishing time. Since live-baiting with aku is a relatively new method, many fishermen still do not know how to go about it or even how to equip themselves. According to many reports, live-baiting was pioneered on the Kona fishing grounds only two decades ago, well after lure fishing had already established itself as the premier method for Hawaii’s waters. ■ During the week of July 4th, Ron “The Guide” held his annual tournament in Kailua-Kona. The tournament is a private fishing contest for a wonderful group from Texas, Colorado and New Mexico. This year’s participants included 50 ladies and gentlemen who fished on some of Kona’s top tournament charter vessels, including BILL COLLECTOR, CHIRIPA, HOOLILI, HOLIDAY, HUMDINGER, JUN KEN PO, LANAUU, MAVERICK, NO PROBLEM, REEL AFFAIR and SEA GENIE. There was a steak dinner and briefing on Sunday, July 3, the evening before the tournament started. That evening the wives and girlfriends of the captains met with the mainland visitors. Lahaina Fishing Report (669-6548) ■ The SPORT DIVER, with Capt. Chris Clements and crewmen Shawn, Bear and R.O., landed an 85-lb striped marlin. They also accounted for a few mahimahi and dozens of ono. Their sister charter boat, the KANOA, operated by Capt. R.O. and crew Shawn McCall, also had some great ono catches. Capt. George Gordon and crew Dave Barnett of the JUDY ANN, geographically speaking, caught two mahimahi off Olowalu. They were of 16 and 22 lbs. The area known as the Last Cane Field produced three good-sized ono. Launiupoko area also produced a 30-lb kahala. Angler Debbie caught a marlin matching her own weight of 86 lbs. Capt. ■ If you were to ask fishermen what is the premier game fish in Hawaii, you’d get a variety of answers depending on who you ask. Deep-sea fishermen would probably tell you marlin or yellowfin tuna are tops, while shorefishermen would undoubtedly say that ulua is the king. And up at Lake Wilson, anglers will tell you that a largemouth bass or a tucunare is the prized fish. However, in large areas across the country, in South America, Europe and New Zealand, many devotees (also called purists or fanatics) would be downright offended that anyone would even consider anything but a trout to be the ultimate game fish! At the end of June I attended the successful Moloka‘i fair as a participant with Alu Like. ■ It has been a hard and worrisome year for Glenn Shiroma, chairman of the 8th Annual Hilo Casting Club Tournament. He has put in months of hard, grueling work, and there were no shortcuts. But he kept plugging along until the Wednesday before the tourney. By then, the committee heads had all the loose ends tied down and were packing their gear for the trip out to the country. ■ For many years a number of skippers who fish the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament have requested that the data forms filled out on every fish taken in that world-class event be altered slightly so that a notation could be made of the type of lure used to catch a fish. In addition, perhaps the lure’s color, skirt color combination, etc. could be described. It was information, they reasoned, from which all fishermen could learn. There has been no such change in the form. Nor do any of the other tournaments on the Kona Coast use a form that would clearly define the lures catching fish so that aspects of them may be compared to other successful lures. ■ Hawaii’s tournament calendar seems to be losing ground with a classic two steps forward and three steps back maneuver that doesn’t exactly bode well for the future of game fishing tournaments in Hawaii! It seems that three of Hawaii’s planned game fishing competitions for the year have been canceled and two new events have come to the fore as partial replacements. To spread the good word first—one new tournament this year is the Windward Coast Jackpot held in July out of He‘eia Kea pier in Kane‘ohe.
