Hawaiian Waters Weather ■ Persistent trade winds will be the dominant weather feature. July is fair weather month — on land. Over the waters expect gusty trades on 6 to 14 days this month. Surf-wise, northwest wave activity is at a minimum with low surf heights of 0 to 5 feet at northern shores. Surf action along southern shores will peak in July and extend into September. Mariners are advised of the possible occurrence of two kinds of potentially hazardous weather: thunderstorms with heavy rain from an upper trough and tropical cyclone invasions into Hawaiian waters.…

■ Besides the 4th of July this month, another date to remember is the 1st because that’s when you need new fishing licenses. For most of us, the merry month of May wasn’t. The continued water fluctuation kept the fish on the move, so even on the best days fishing was very sporadic. They wouldn’t hold in any one area long enough to establish a pattern, so the trick seemed to be to cover as much water as possible and hope for the best. In bassin lingo this maneuver is known as “run and gun.” The few diehards that were persistent enough to keep trying were rewarded with some nice fish. ■ May turned out to be an outrigger-bending month for Wai‘anae fishermen as the leaping Allison yellowfin tuna arrived on schedule and as advertised for their annual summer blast along our leeward shores. Although a few isolated ahi have been coming up from time to time since the beginning of March, the first big wave of tuna did not reach our coastline until the last week in May. Along with these rotund gold beauties came the larger billfish. In fact, many fishermen are wondering which type of fish they hooked when their fish never showed itself and was later lost. Tournament chairman Big Mac Macalino has reported that the Leeward Trailers were up to their ahi-catching ways by doing very well in their Memorial Weekend tournament. Nine ahi from 116…

This letter is to confirm that the Golden Marlin $1 Million Fishing Tournament, scheduled for September 6-11,1983, in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, is alive and well and beginning to approach its 50-team limit. We feel that this communication is necessary because of the confusion that has arisen recently, due to the sudden cancellation of the June 15th Marlin International Tournament. The problems began with an erroneous news report, in which our Golden Marlin tournament somehow became confused with the cancelled Marlin International. Other media picked up the mistake, and suddenly there was an out-of-control wildfire of rumor and speculation that the Golden Marlin had been, or was about to be, cancelled. ■ May is a spring festival and also represents growth. The fishing reports that I have been receiving sure do indicate that the number of fish caught this month was more than last month. Lahaina Fishins Report The CHARGER, back in operation from drydock, landed a 38-lb ono on the way back from O‘ahu. Other fine fish caught by the CHARGER include a 55-lb mysterious no nose spearfish and a giant 78-lb ono. SUNRISE’S Capt. Kurt Rose and crew Dave Seavers say that they boated two spearfish, mahimahi and ono for their anglers. They report an excellent and plentiful month. Also reporting fine ono and mahimahi landings was the fishing team from the charter boat KANOA. Capt. R.O. and crew Sean McCall assisted their happy anglers. The marlin are growing.…

■ Congratulations to Capt. Myrna Holdredge and her team on their victory in May’s Golden Goddess gathering. The fishing wahines of Kona agree that the better women won. With the exception of lone male first mate Randy Nathaniel, the all female group accounted for a 432-lb Pacific blue marlin, the best in the tournament. The Goddess attracted more contestants this year, despite its weekday scheduling. The entry fee must have appeared more appealing in ’83, lowered by a full $200 per team from last year’s $400 fee. Many angler-ettes missed the boat, however, due to work-week obligations. For this reason, a few gals had to pass up a position on the ULTIMATE team, which Myrna assembled at the last minute. Anglers from some 25 nations will be among 75 teams that will gather in Kona, August 5, 1983. to answer the starting cannon for the Silver Anniversary Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament, it was announced by Peter Fithian Founder-Chairman. Only New Zealand and Australia participated to make the HIBT an international contest in the summer of 1959, when only about eight charter fishing boats plied the deep waters of the Kona Coast. Today, more than 50 Kona charter boats are in year-round operation with many of the captains and boats rated as world class by the Tournament Committee, which maintains a careful record of performance. ■ Hawai‘i’s 1983 tournament season is flush with success at mid-point, and virtually everyone is expecting to see the best year ever by the end of the season. Some of the good things are great catches and steadily improving tournament management. The only bad news is that with a growing number of tournaments, some events have suffered from less than the expected number of entries. But, considering the state of the economy and tourism in general, the losses have been more than made up through an increase in the number of local entries. ■ We were trolling around Makapu’u bank, through thousands of bite-sized aku of 2 lbs. After our charter pulled in a few, the customers asked me if I knew the age of the fish. Growth rates of fish vary greatly from species to species, but aku are well-known for their rapid development. The table below compares the growth rates of aku with ahi and was taken from a fisheries bulletin published in 1981. This information gives us an easy and accurate method for gauging the ages of these two fish. These measurements were taken from hundreds of fish kept in live tanks and were statistically compared to tagged returns of wild fish. ■ In the February 1981 issue of Hawaii Fishins News there is an article I wrote that is entitled “Mini Hot Shots for Kaku.” The design for the mini hot shot presented in that article was based on the design of the “micro-jig,” a lure that I read about in an article published in Fishing World magazine. The micro-jig was designed for freshwater fishing; my adaptation of it — the mini hot shot — is designed for saltwater spincasting with ultra-light tackle. ■ For two issues we’ve written about the art of making offshore trolling lures, and, in return, we’ve received some interesting responses. Among the most useful of these is the suggestion that solid plastic lures are not as successful in rough water as are those weighted with lead. Our correspondent asked for suggestions on how to add ballast to trolling plugs. Before describing some simple ways to weight lures, let’s talk first about why you would do it and what the effect would be. You add lead to make a lure that either dives deeper or stays deeper when it tracks, and there is a marked difference between the two actions. In the summer of each year, I live in a house in a village that looks out across the ranch land and the desert to the sea. In the sea, tuna and billfish swim dark and threatening in the blue shadows and the water is somber and shifting in the gray of the cold morning light. Anyone who goes to a doctor with a problem usually starts out by telling the doctor where it hurts. When taking an automobile in for repairs, an estimate is often required after the problem has been diagnosed and before repair work is started. Many customers also ask for any parts, which were changed, to be returned with the car. A healthy person may only go to the doctor when something goes wrong. This philosophy of maintenance is termed “breakdown repair.” On the other hand, the car should be brought in every so many thousand miles whether something is specifically wrong or not, to prevent catastrophic failures on the open highway. ■ The long awaited ahi made his presence known on the Windward Coast in the latter part of may. It was a very productive month for the many who took advantage of the good trolling conditions. There was an abundance of mahimahi and ono and the first healthy taste of ahi for 1983. At the start of the month, Capt. ReubemChing on the POPO TOO made his way 18 to 20 miles straight out the channel. After trolling and baiting a nice piece of rubbish, his total catch included 20 mahimahi, 14 ono, and a lot of aku and shibiko. ■ ALOHA KE AKUA from the friendly isle of Moloka’i. The good news is that the fishing is still continuing to be good. This seems to be true for both the inshore and offshore fishermen as I’ve had reports from both sides and all have been favorable. Last year I wrote about a technique being used which entailed the use of a garbage bag as a vehicle to get the bait out far beyond the distance anyone could possibly cast a line. I thought about sharing the technical aspect of the setup but decided against it as there seems to be enough illustrations elsewhere in every issue of HFN regarding shore casting techniques. ■ One of the greatest attractions of attending a tournament briefing is their late afternoon hour. The sun is approaching its lowest ebb, highlighting Kona’s already brilliant setting and making a drive through Kailua town, via a path used by alii, a tranquil experience. The site of a briefing, by contrast, presents a different scene. Take the evening of May 19 for example. On the brink of the Third Annual Wee Guys congregation, parking slots in or around the vicinity of the Keauhou Beach Hotel were nearly impossible to find.
