■ In January of each year, every intermediate and high school in Hawai‘i conducts its own science fair to select projects for statewide competition during the State Science Fair held in Neal S. Blaisdell Center around March. My son Carey was required to work on a project as part of his science requirements. Since his dad is an avid akule fisherman (or tries to be), he decided to work on akule preference for “color.” We put the word color in quotes since we knew from Bob Neuweiler’s column in Hawaii Fishing News that pelagic fish are colorblind and can really see only different shades of gray. Head, Lower and Middle Schools Hawaii Preparatory Academy ■ The trouble with “old sayings” is that you can’t really ignore them. No matter how many times you hear them, there is still some truth left. Take, for example, “You are never too old to learn.” For me, it’s a good example because it regularly changes my fishing. Here’s a “for instance” for you. If you had asked me over the last 30 years what the best knot was for tying a leader to the ring of a hook or a lure, I’d have told you to use an “improved clinch knot.” Not any more. I’ve used the improved clinch knot successfully for years; at least, whenever the knot failed, I still figured that any other knot whould have, as well.…

■ On April 30 and May 1, the spearfishing eliminations tournament was conducted to select two additional teams of three men each to represent Hawai‘i in the U.S. National Skindiving Spearfishing Tournament sponsored by the Underwater Society of America. The Hawaii Council of Dive Clubs is one of the many member councils that make up the U S of A. Since Hawai‘i won last year’s tournament held in waters off of Kona, we are privileged to send three teams instead of the customary two, if we choose so to do. Our first place team will remain intact and represent us as the “A” team. ■ The 6th Annual Kona Gold Jackpot Tournament may not have produced the largest fish in its history, but it certainly produced the closest finish in memory. The largest fish taken in the mid-May contest off the Big Island’s Kona Coast weighed just one pound more than the second largest fish! But that one pound made a $15,000 difference in prize winnings. That close first-place finish, by the way, was not the only winning position where very little weight made the difference in the earnings of a team. The third place fish weighed in at just 1½ pounds more than the fourth place fish, and the sixth place fish was a mere 8 ounces heavier than the seventh place catch. ■ For some unknown reason, the gorgeous calm and flat weather around the islands during this winter suddenly turned to rough and windy this spring during several weeks in April. The bad weather did not stop our fishermen from venturing forth, however, and many have come in with full fish boxes lately. Large billfish and a few ahi of over 100 pounds started showing up on the scene, and everybody has been anticipating the annual run of the Allison yellowfin tuna that come to our shores each summer. With these tuna come those gigantic billfish that often surprise an angler when they enter an ahi school. ■ There were 32 marlin weighing over 200 lbs caught during April, and of these eight were in the 300-lb size; six were in the 400-lb bracket; four were in the 500-lb range; and four more topped the 600-lb mark. During the first week of April, the “top boat” was the LANAAU, which, with Capt. Rusty Unger, brought a 620-lb marlin to the scales. The second week of April, Capt. ■ On Maui’s coast there are places where barren, windswept cliffs lie eroded like worn, gnarled hands of old fishermen … areas, grooved and crumbling, where determined footfalls of fishermen turn clumsy and falter. ■ I don’t know what it is about the month of June. June is when publishers rub their larcenous hands in glee, knowing that a lovesick public will be scarfing up drippy books by sentimental poets who have nothing better to tell us than “in spring a young man’s fancy turns to thoughts of love,” and “June is busting out all over,”and, and, well, you know, like gross me out with a spoon, man. Never mind the fact that spring and busting out happened all the way back in March. ■ The Golden Goddess Tournament was initiated by Western Sports Tournaments Inc. as a vehicle to attract women anglers to Kona waters around the dates of the popular Kona Gold Jackpot tournament. The first year, the idea took hold but for the last two years new dates seemed to keep many women at home, and the event suffered. It was on the verge of floundering completely. In May of 1983, the event was moved back into a time slot paralleling the massive Kona Gold Jackpot, and the move seems to have worked as the 4th running of the Golden Goddess saw 41 teams fish the waters of Kona for two days in pursuit of the Big Island’s famous game fish. ■ Scientific eyes, those interested in the topic of physiology anyway, will be gazing in Kona’s direction the next few years. The Pacific Gamefish Foundation, headed by Scientific Director Dr. Charles (Chuck) Daxboeck, has moved its headquarters to the Big Island and will be “open for business” this summer. A now familiar part of the HBT/HIBT annual scene is the researchers working with this non-profit organization. They will now have a laboratory at their disposal located conveniently between Kailua Pier and Volcano Isle Fish, Inc. Incorporated in 1975, the PGF was founded to “further the knowledge, conservation and management of Pacific game fish, with particular emphasis on billfish and tuna.” This work will continue in ’83 when 15 experts with a wide range of diciplines congregate in Kailua town to…

■ The few April showers that we had may not exactly bring May flowers, as the old saying goes, but they did bring a little relief rom the rapidly dropping water. By the end of the month, the water had risen approximately five feet which was both a blessing and a curse. The good thing about it was that it gave a little more time before the aeration system has to go into operation. Maybe the electricity will be hooked up before we need it. Also it hid some of the tuc nests that were so vulnerable. With the rising water and some of the nests that I was able to push into deeper water, we just might get a decent spawn this year. Hyperbaric Treatment Center Operational The U.H. School of Medicine’s Hyperbaric Treatment Center at Look Laboratory, Kewalo Basin, has been fully operational since its dedication on April 4, 1983. The changes are amazing from the days when it operated solely as a hyperbaric research laboratory to the present, as it now also operates as a hyperbaric treatment center which treats emergency cases involving the bends and air embolism and non-emergency cases Of certain medical conditions. The facility still maintains its research function. The center is now manned on a 24-hour, seven-days-a-week basis in order to treat emergency cases. During regular working hours there are staff members of both the research laboratory (including a diving physician) and the treatment center present. ■ 1983 is without a doubt Hawai‘i’s most explosive tournament year to date. With more tournaments, more new tournaments and more tournament participation than ever before. As you read this in June, a big chunk of the tournament money promised for 1983 has already been paid out, but the biggest tournaments of the year are still to come! May is Hawai‘i’s favorite tournament month this year — that is a real switch from “the olden days” when July and August were considered to be the only months for serious tournament fishing. This year saw May witness Hawai‘i’s three biggest women’s fishing tournaments, two major jackpot events and the biggest small boat event in the state. What a month! ■ It was a tournament of “firsts” this year for the senoritas in the 4th annual Sauza Senoritas Tournament held out of the Hawaii Yacht Club at the Ala Wai on O‘ahu. Both the first-placed and second-placed teams also placed first and second in last year’s tournament! It was also the first time that a ladies’ team had caught a dean sweep since the advent of the tourney four years ago! Able fish-fighter Wenda Ching of the MACHO KAI landed the only fish over 100 pounds that came in during the two days of April 30th and May 1st in this very rough water contest. Fishing with Allan Araki and Larry Tang, Wenda hooked her l49¼-lb billfish on a Larry Tang bait some 3 to 4 miles outside of Nanakuli…

■ April showers bring May flowers and some very trade windy weather. Lahaina Fishing Report. Aloha to ISLANDER Il’s Capt. Denny Putnam and crew Tim Putnam, who assisted happy angler Kerry Koehnlein of Sacramento, California, with a 29-lb mahimahi caught by K-buoy on an Ermin lure using 80-lb test line. Also caught outside, by anglers Ray Padillo and Kathy Neldon, were a 25-lb mahi and a 31-lb striped marlin respectively. The ISLANDER II was also chartered by Gordon Gagnon of Boulder, Colorado, who brought up one fine mahi of 36 lbs. The BROADBILL’s Capt.
