Since January 30,1980, the nation’s recreational boaters have been required to have devices on board their boats which are certified by the U.S. Coast Guard to be able to treat human wastes before discharge or to retain them on board for discharge into pumpout stations ashore. The regulations covering this requirement stem from regulations of the Environmental Protection Agency and the Amendments to the Clean Water Act of 1972 which Congress passed over the veto of the president in October of that year. ■ As most of you might recall, I ended my last article headed for Lana‘i to cover the Lana‘i Rendezvous. And that I did. The Lana‘i Rendezvous has to be the classic tournament of the State. There is nothing, really, to compare it with. It’s a two-day tournament with the weigh-in and the awards party held at Manele Bay, Lana‘i. Close to 55 boats and over 200 entrants participated in the event this year. I went over a day early as a non-participant, on Nick Czar’s boat, the EARLY TIMES. There were five of us aboard—Nick, Greg, Marcia, Jeff and myself. Our plan was to stake out a campsite and then I’d stay on shore during the day while the rest went out fishing. October has passed, and the marlin population on the northshore is still large. Even though we are now into those dreaded winter months when the fishing is supposed to be slow, the Hale‘iwa boats continue to show up at. the scale with “yet another marlin” or a batch of mahimahi. October was blessed with good weather till the end of the month when heavy rainstorms kept most of the fleet home. ■ Few lures can really be called “secret weapons.” That’s because the good ones are too well known and well used to be thought of as “secret.” In Hawaii, however, there really is a good lure that catches lots of fish when used right — yet it isn’t used often or by lots of people. That type of lure is the “spoon.” A spoon lure is a shiny piece of metal with a hook at one end and a ring for attaching the lure to your line at the other. Some spoons are flat as a knife blade. Over four years have now passed since Capt. Alana McKinney told the readers of HAWAII FISHING NEWS about her rescue of a lost and injured loggerhead turtle off O‘ahu. ■ Six teams from O‘ahu and Maui split up the cash this year in the LAHAINA JACKPOT TOURNAMENT held on Oct. 29, 30 and 31 out of Lahaina, Maui, with three teams (including the $25,000 first-place winners) coming from O‘ahu and three from Maui. Most of the bilfish that placed during this IGFA “biggest fish” tourney came up in the waters behind Moloka’i and Maui, an area where the majority of the winning fish have been caught during the past five years. Barton Akamine, a salesman with Hawaii Pipe and Supply, landed the winning 500-pound Pacific blue marlin while fishing with his team aboard Bruce Matson’s 42-foot Uniflite CORMORANT out of Hawaii Kai. ■ An official closing to the 1982 tournament fishing season on the Big Island came October 24 at the Keauhou Beach Hotel where the Kona Mauka Trailers celebrated their final competition of the year. Donovan Cho repeated his performance of just six months ago during the Trollers’s wahine tournament by claiming top prize for the largest a‘u caught by the 26 teams. KEAHAULANI’s “green machine” snagged a 176-pound Pacific blue marlin with a straight-runner on the first day of the weekend invitational tourney. Nephew/unde combo of Cho and angler Mike Madawi of Hilo found their fish near B-buoy down Miloli’i way. After the initial dazzling surface display, the fish descended to the depths for a 30-minute fight. In the Mauka Trailer tradition, “Sandbagger” Cho estimated their catch at 100 pounds,…

Are you a fisherman, a yachtsman or do you have any other interest in boating? If so you will want to read on to learn what the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary can do for you. The Auxiliary is the civilian arm of the U.S. Coast Guard. So far this year, here in Pacific waters under Coast Guard jurisdiction, Auxiliarists have saved 16 lives. Also while out on search and rescue missions in their own private vessels, Auxiliarists have assisted 186 boats in distress, which were valued at $2,062,000. There are 51 Coast Guard approved Auxiliary facility boats which put in 3,096 hours on patrols this year. Commodore William C. ■ Judging by the response it has elicited, the Hawaii Fishing Coalition is bound to be a success. The time, energy and dedication of the 16-member Board of Directors has been unrelenting. Since their initiation on Sept. 14,1982 (see Nov. issue of HFN, page 14), the directors have met regularly, piecing together the ideas of many different fishermen and working in committees to activate the coalition. Two sportfishing-supportive lawyers, a CPA, and a financial consultant have volunteered their efforts to the cause, and the coalition’s bylaws and corporate papers are now complete. Needless to say, the constitution committee, headed by Trudy Nishihara, has successfully accomplished its initial tasks. Artificial Reefs — The Council Executive Committee approved a motion by Scotty Bowman to contribute $50 to the Mahi Artificial Reef Project conceived and carried out through the efforts of Ken Taylor of South Seas Aquatics Dive Shop. Frank Farm and Scotty Bowman plan to meet with the Hawaii State Division of Aquatic Resources to discuss the need for other artificial reefs around Oahu. Volunteer divers are needed to monitor the probable movement of the Mahi since it isn’t anchored and doesn’t have large openings in the hull for water to pass through, Contact Bob Reed at 488-3865. ■ Neither wind, nor rain, nor thunder, nor lightning could keep 40 teams of ladies from fishing in ibis year’s WAHINE JACKPOT TOURNAMENT out of Lahaina. Maui on Oct. 27. The day tried desperately to dawn amidst a heavy downpour while the women and their captains and crews pressed their noses against fogged up windows, wondering if the tourney would be canceled. Although the “start fishing” time was moved back an hour to 8 a.m., the tourney went off as planned. Most of the boats went north, to the areas behind Moloka‘i and Maui, hoping to find some protection from the southerly storm. ■ October was a busy month for the Kewalo charter fleet. The Moloka’i-to-O‘ahu Men’s Canoe Race and the Lahaina Jackpot Tournament accented a month already blessed with the continuation of a good marlin run. Capt. Gary Oliver scored the first triple of the month on the ELO I with mate Eric Brown. Bob Hicks of Marysville, Calif., angled his first deepsea catch, a 205-pound blue marlin, in only 40 minutes. He was concentrating on reeling, so didn’t see the fish jump but said “it was great anyway.” Rich Swink of Kansas landed two fish — a 170-pound marlin and a 53-pound mahimahi — on his first saltwater adventure. Lake Wilson ■ The water had been dropping steadily all month, and everyone was just waiting for it to get out of the grass so they could get down to some serious fishing. The pongee and channel cats were already on the move, so it was just a matter of time before the bass fishing busted wide open. Then the rain came. It’s time to break out your spinnerbaits again because overnight the water flooded over the darn and put us back into the same situation we’ve been fighting all year. The North Fork didn’t suffer much damage, but the runoff from Kutree Reservoir turned the South into a sea of red mud. ■ Sharp hooks catch more fish. Very few, if any, offshore fishermen would argue this statement. Over the years, deck hands and mates (whose job it is to keep trolling gear in top shape) have ground files into dust while sharpening hooks till the points shone like diamonds. From experience I can truthfully say that sharpening hooks is a time-consuming, royal pain in the okole. But it’s well worth it. Although a hook’s shape is great for holding fish, it is not very good tor holding in your hand while tiling.
