■ The four-day tournament began with plenty of large fish caught the first day, Friday, Sept. 17. Kona, the Marlin Capital of the World, was true to its name and many 500+-pound and 600+-pound marlin were weighed at the Kailua-Kona pier during the exciting contest. There were 102 teams in this tournament.
Team 21, aboard the AERIAL IV, caught the largest marlin, weighing 764½ pounds. It was nabbed on the last day, Monday, Sept. 20, by angler Wes Vanatta. Capt. Rick Rose was the skipper, and Mark Hansen the crew.
On the first day of competition, the AERIAL IV landed a 444½-pound marlin, and that marlin stayed on the money-scoreboard until the fourth and last day.
