THE WEKE ‘ULA …A GREAT CATCH! The weke ‘ula is the most sporting of Hawaii‘s “red fish.” Like the opakapaka and the onaga, the weke ‘ula is a strong fighter and a beautifully-colored catch. What makes the weke ‘ula special for the sportfisherman is its feeding grounds. Schools of weke ‘ula are found in waters that are shallow enough to allow fishermen to use light tackle to catch them. ■ Weke ‘ula are members of the goatfish family. Hawaiian waters are home to three different goatfish that are very similar-looking. Their bodies have the same shape, but they are differently-colored and they live on the bottom at different depths. ■ As you read this article the mahimahi action should be in full swing, with every boat coming home with from five to twenty fish each. Way back in February though mahimahi were scarce, aku and small ahi dominated the local fishing scene with an occasional big fish tipping the scales throughout the month. This is the biggest of the Hilo Casting Club for 1982. I thought that you could recognize him in the Hanapa‘a Holoholo section. He hooked and landed the fish at Keahole Pt. in Kona and fought it for over two hours. He used puhi bait, a 6/0 Senator and 80-lb. Maxima line. ■ David Nakamura of Hilo was fortunate enough to land the biggest white ulua of the year and during one of the most prestigious shorecasting tournaments in the State of Hawaii. He naturally walked (I should say danced) away with the top honors and some of the biggest prizes in shorecasting history. The jackpot itself was over a thousand dollars and it made David smile all the way to the bank. The tournament was the Hilo Casting Club’s Sixth Annual Fishing Tournament. During the eventful weigh-in at the Seven Seas Luau House in Hilo, everyone who saw the fish knew from past experience that the fish would easily push the scales over the hundred-pound mark. It is very difficult to express my true appreciation for the wonderful testimonial dinner staged in my honor recently at the Sheraton-Waikiki Hotel. It has proved impossible to contact each one individually. Hopefully this brief note in Hawaii Fishing News will reach those I have not been able to speak to personally. ■ This year’s Outstanding Diver of the Year Awards (ODYA) Banquet was held February 13th at the Empress Restaurant in the Chinese Cultural Center. The annual banquet honors the Council diver who has made significant contributions to his club and/or the Council and/or the diving community. The member clubs selected Tom Lenzini as the 1981 Oustanding Diver of the Year. Tom is a member of the Sea Urchin Dive Club in Wahiawa. He commenced diving a little over six years ago in Oklahoma. Diving there is done mostly in lakes and quarries and Tom stated that there wasn’t much to that. He was very happy to be transferred to Hawaii where the tempo of diving picked up quickly. He has been a member of the Sea Urchins for four years.…
