■ My dictionary defines the jig as a “rapid, lively springy, irregular dance.” It also gives several other meanings, but I suspect that the terpsichorean sense is the one from which all others sprang. ■ A little while back a good friend of mine, Armelio Cabatingan, asked me if I would like to go out with him and see what Kona crabbing was all about. Naturally I accepted. It was a weekday and I agreed to meet him at his house the next morning at 5 am as the weather reports were favorable and neither one of us were working that day. All of its Hawaiian cousins are brightly-colored fish with hues ranging from rosy to bright red, occasionally offset with silvers, oranges and yellows. The grey snapper, on the other hand, is about as drably dressed as a fish can be—light grey with bluish or greenish tints and, occasionally, slightly darker bars. All of its Hawaiian cousins are shy creatures, hiding away in the great depths where they are among the deepest-living of Hawai‘i’s food fish. REPRINT FROM HFN - MARCH 1978 After you have eaten your fill of the fresh fish that you caught today, don’t freeze the rest of it, “CAN” it in a Mason jar. It’s easy, economical and immediately available to eat without defrosting. First let’s get our terminology straight. You will need a canning Mason jar and a flat (lid) which is the same diameter as the mouth of the jar. The flat is metal with a round rubber ring on the bottom for sealing (very important). Also you will need a metal ring which is threaded to match the rings on the jar to tighten down the flat. These are available at most department/drugstores and even at many grocery stores. ■ The Weather Appears to be Returning to a More normal pattern after an unusual two and a half months. Trade wins returned in mid-february after arecord-setting absence in Hawaiian waters. almost continuous northwesterly wave and surf action must have severely eroded exposed sandy shores. Spring is approching according to the calender but in Hawaiian waters winter-type weather can still appear in march. but there will be more good weather days than bad weather days. There is always the possibility of the occurence of any of the following severe weather events: cold front with strong kona winds, upper trough with heavy rain, gusty trade winds and high northwest wave and surf. They either go all out to find their quarry or just happen to come across one swimming in the area that would make them think twice about unexpected areas again. ■ The use of artificial lures in Hawaii as the preeminent means of capturing offshore gamefish has led many away from the use of teasers. To some, the teasers available on the market are so much like lures it seems senseless to run them without hooks, others seem to feel that teasers will not attract fish any better than lures. In fact, teasers do have a place in Hawaiian gamefishing and they have a very important place, not only alongside their close cousins the Hawaiian trolling lure but alongside live and dead baits as well. ■ Divers have come up with some unusual methods of keeping their masks from fogging up. They have used good old-fashioned saliva, wet tobacco and right out of the kitchen, Lemon-scented Joy, a popular supermarket detergent. For those who preferred something more fancy, several commercial products were available at the favorite dive shop. Keep Klear and Scuba Defog were two common defogging solutions which contained surfactants (detergents) diluted with either water or alcohol. The ingredients in surfactants can irritate the eyes if used improperly and that is apparently what happened. Both products were recalled by the manufacturers. Keep Klear was originally developed for NASA. It came into use for divers in 1968 and nearly 500,000 bottles were sold in a 12-year period before a complaint was received. Five complaints in…

■ Eventually every serious ulua fisherman starts searching for the elusive common denominator that will help him hook and land the super shoreline gamefish (ulua) with more consistency. The mere fact that the ulua is out there isn’t enough for the fisherman who has tasted the thrill of battling such a powerful shorefish. Now the serious angler searches for the veteran fisherman that has the most impressive record and subtly tries to pick his brain for the elusive answer. Some will tell you that the key to landing ulua consistently is to constantly “paly” (chum) the shoreline. The big event was held on January 30th with the help of Hawaii Fishing News who provided the trophies and Izuo Brothers, Ltd. who donated fishing kits for the Cub Scouts. It was a beautiful sight to see 227 Cub fishermen in action from handlines to rods and reels. The bait ranged from bread, earthworms, California shrimp and cheese to raisins. ■ For finishing in the top ten places, twelve Hawaiian charter boat fishing captains, eight of them in Kona, have earned Richard Boone Award Certificates of Excellence for their performances in last year’s Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament, it was announced today by Lewis T. Sterry, President of the sponsoring Hawaiian International Billfish Association. ■ The Emergency Breathing System (EBS), a mini bail out bottle for divers, is one of the latest products to come onto the scuba market to help increase the safety of diving. Basically, it is a small bottle complete with a one-stage regulator. Its purpose is to eliminate the potential hazards of buddy breathing and/or octopus breathing. In an out-of-air situation, a complete breathing system eliminates the need for risking physical contact with a panicked diver. The two-cubic-foot aluminum bottle has enough air to comfortably get a diver to the surface from 100 feet at the proper rate of ascent. ■ The United States National Skindiving Championship Tournament will be held in Hawaii—on the Kona Coast—sometime during August of 1982. Hawaii will be allowed to enter two teams consisting of three divers per team. In an effort to select the best six men to represent Hawaii, an elimination tournament will be held on March 20th and 21st in Kona. Duration of the tournament is five hours per day. Once again it is emphasized that this is FREEDIVING ONLY—NO SCUBA ALLOWED.
