HAWAIIAN WATERS WEATHER Winter-type severe weather hi Hawaiian waters begins this month. Some of the worst weather in the islands have occurred in November, It is likely that there will be some bad weather days during the month. Mariners are cautioned that the change from good weather to bad weather can be fast. The following are the possible bad weather conditions that can occur; high northwest swell and surf, gusty trade winds, heavy rains, strong southwest kona winds, squalls, thunderstorms and waterspouts. Southerly surf is down while high swell and surf activity from the northwest direction greatly increase. More than half of the day?, of the month will have higher than 5-foot surf at Sunset 8each. FIRST HAWAII WOMEN’S SPEARFISHING TOURNAMENT During the first week of last month, a special spearfishing tournament, that hopefully will become an annual event, was held on the Kona Coast of Hawaii. The tournament was conducted under the auspices of the Hawaii Council of Diving Clubs and coordinated by Terry Lentz who actually honchoed the event from beginning to end. Overall, the weather and water conditions during the week were fabulous which was a definite plus for the women who were basically unfamiliar with skin diving in the Kona Coast area, initially, the women competitors were taken to a shallow reef area approximately 15 miles north of Kailua-Kona. The season of “fallen shearwaters” will become very noticeable soon. In a cooperative effort, the Department of Land and Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have planned for the salvage of several hundred Newell’s shearwaters that are expected to fall to the ground on Kauai this fall. Last year, over 1,300 fallen birds were picked up by the public, collected by wildlife officials and released back into the wild. The Newell’s shearwater is one of two species of native Hawaiian sea birds that are threatened with extinction. They are only known to nest on Kauai where they have been able to survive predators and human development. The mongoose may have been an important cause of their becoming extinct on the other islands. Each spring, these sea birds…

• The Lanai Rendezvous was 11 years old this year and the bash held in Manele Harbor over the Discoverer’s Day Weekend made it clear why this little event is one of Hawaii’s most popular annual fishing derbies. The tournament rules allow a start in any harbor in Hawaii, any time after midnight Friday night. You must be in Manele Harbor by 5 pm on Sunday afternoon, allowing teams to fish literally anywhere in the state before traveling to Lanai’s only small boat harbor for weigh ins and awards. And they come from all over. Captain Jack Prettyman took his charter boat, the KEALIA, out on August 24th, with his charter Mr. & Mrs. Fritz of California, Mr. Irchos of Australia and Mr. Glenn McFarland of California. They were out for a day of fishing and what an afternoon of excitement they had, catching five Pacific blue marlin! All the fish were caught on lures and all of them caught in four and one half hours. The total weight was 1244 lbs. At the weigh-in at Kailua Pier a large crowd watched with excitement and extended their congratulations to Captain Jack Prettyman, his crewman George Place and the anglers. Scuba divers who are members of the Underwater Society of America may be interested in the highlights of the recent Board of Governors meeting in Houston, Texas. There are now 26 member councils in the US of A. After a long struggle the US of A has been granted tax-exempt status as a nonprofit organization. The old Society was dissolved and a new entity, the Underwater Society of America, Incorporated, was created. The officers, directors and members of the old Society were voted in as officers, directors and members of the new Society. This was followed amending the bylaws, with tax-exempt status, for the new Society. Each member council is now entitled to one vote for each 25 members who have paid dues in the U S of A. The…

It just wasn’t big enough! Sure a 695-pound marlin is a substantial catch by any standards, but considering some of the big fish taken in this year’s fishing tournaments the 695-pound Pacific blue brought to the dock on David Humphreys’ SHACKLES, on the first day of competition by angler Walter Burrichter of Florida, just didn’t seem like a winner, at least not to me. But it held up through the tournament. And for the next 3 days Walter and his brother August, who were fishing for tournament sponsor Aloha Airlines as Team Number One, and Captain David Humphreys and his crew Walter Gay, held their collective okoles every time they heard someone say “hook-up” on the radio. The action on the northshore this past month was MARLIN. Only most of these marlin were playing hard to get as many fishermen were returning with stories of lost longnoses. The marlin seemed to be very spread out and strikes were being recorded from Kaena to Kahuku. September started out with Labor Day Weekend action on the 5th. Quite a few boaters launched from Haleiwa. Many of these fishermen headed towards Kaena Point to drag shell and the bold ones, headed north to try the trolling action. All of the trolling fish caught that day were found around a huge green cargo net. This fantastic net was found first by the captain of the HELE KU, Mike Taylor. The LIZ C. was out cruising near Victor Buoy on Sept. 17th with Wally Choi, his wife Liz and son Lester on board. Things were quiet and there wasn’t a bird in sight. Suddenly a rod started screaming, then another and yet another! Finally all five rods were going! Unfortunately their good luck aku pole shattered into three pieces! “It was a real fire drill with all that excitement!” explained Liz. Two fish came off but they managed to put three husky black ulua into the box. These scrappers later weighed in at 53, 45 and 38 pounds. When I was a youngster and saw the ulua and other big fish caught by casters along the shore, it” never crossed my mind that I could be landing a fish of that proportion myself. I guess I felt that my opportunity would come later when I graduated from bamboo handpoles and light spinning gear. At that time, most of us were quite satisfied with the ½-pound moanas and hinaleas that we managed to catch. Casting for ulua was way beyond our reach. I should have known better. Captain Jerome Judd who runs the JUN KEN PO on charter in Kona reminded me of this fact a month or so ago, and we began to relive old tales of short bait strikes that had happened in our experiences. Nearly all of you have fished tournaments and have used some type of tournament radio procedure, but some have wondered, “Why?” Here are a few of the answers to the “why’s”. CHECK IN The “on the line” call. Obviously the reason is to learn which teams are ready to fish. When the frequency “seems” to be clear, merely give your team number and the words “on the line”. There is no need to give your team number. Then wait for Control to respond to you, and then your advising that you’re “on the line”, and then get the acknowledgement from Control. Fishermen who have boats moored within Waianae Harbor often have a long hike up the piers from their boats to waiting pickups when they are carrying fish. They have solved this problem in various ways. One built a pushcart with built-in rodholders. Some use supermarket type shopping carts. When a large marlin or ahi needs to be carried, a long medical stretcher is just perfect. One man can get on each corner and all four can carry a marlin of over 300 pounds. Capt. Talk about fish stories! One Sunday afternoon in September the Uemura brothers, Masami on his PATTI GENE and Ronnie and Miles on the KEAU, were just enjoying another afternoon of trolling when the KEAU started having engine problems. Quickly Masami pulled the line and started to search for the KEAU. Finally on the horizon Masami spotted the KEAU. By the time he got there the engine was down so they attached the towline and headed for home.
