HAWAIIAN WATERS WEATHER For Hawaiian waters, summer is over and winter is approaching. October may preview-’ The upcoming winter’s weather. There will be a greater variety of weather but the severity of bad weather has not reached its potential. The following are potentially bad weather events, listed in order of decreasing expected occurrence: 1. northwest swell and surf 2. gusty trade winds 3. weak cold front 4. Kona low 6. north swell and surf 6. hurricane. Other than the northwest swell and surf, the expected frequencies of the other events are low, Northwest surf activity picks up while southerly surf is down. Does sound attract fish? I suppose that it depends on the sound—and on the fish. A scuba diving friend answered the question with a resounding “yes”. It’s an old diving trick to sit on the bottom and bang rocks together. My diver friend tells me that the percussive noise brings ulua in to investigate. He also says that curious kaku will also approach and hang around. Sometimes his clicking rocks entice uku and kahala. Perhaps there’s a way to rig up some underwater castanets for bottom fishing for big predators. Maybe the trick of juggling a heavy sinker up and down on the bottom is at least as effective for the sound it makes as for the seductive dance of the baits. The August tournament wasn’t one of your more spectacular affairs — unless you happen to be on the winning team, that is. Last month’s was one of those where one team couldn’t seem to do anything wrong, while the rest of the crowd just got sunburned. Before the day was over, the team of Woody Wilson and Al Towner boated four bass that totalled 11 pounds and 3 ounces to walk off with first place honors and the big fish award as well. This knot is one of the best knots for forming loops in plugs, jigs and spoons. I also use this in place of sleeves when I don’t have the right size that I need. The knot is basically two square knots working against each other. All that is required is to first tie a square knot on the leader. Next string the line end through the eye of the hook, plug, spoon or jig and go back into the square knot that you had made previously. Once you’ve gone back into the square knot you make another square knot around the main line, but using the section that you strung through the eye of the plug. The First Annual Hanapa‘a Kala Fishing Tournament was supposed to be a mini-jackpot fishing tournament but it was turned into a monster. Windward Sport Fishing Club’s plan was to supply 50 boats with a two-day fishing tournament. At 7:00 Friday the briefing should have started but the tournament committee was still collecting entries. At 7:45 the briefing began, a total of 76 boats had entered. Besides bad radio communications (due to the strong skip), and a protest filed by four boats, the tournament ran smoothly. Dave Parsons of the Department of Transportation was informed the day before the tournament about what was going on. He gave me a little advice about future tournaments and wished us all the best of luck. He could not supply us with the needed harbor…

The First Annual Fiji International Game Fishing Tournament drew teams from New Zealand, Guam, Tahiti, Fiji and Hawaii and proved successful beyond the wildest expectations of the tournament sponsors. Sure everyone knew there were big wahoo (ono) in Fiji and that a world record for sailfish was held there for awhile, but no one knew for sure if there was much else worth catching — at least worth traveling all those miles on the offhand chance of catching. Well, catch they did. The catch included 2 black marlin, a 357-pound Pacific blue and a 220-pound striped marlin. 3 substantial billfish of 3 different species came up in the same event — very likely a first for tournament gamefishing anywhere! They strip line from the reel so rapidly that the reel screams as though it is frightened. Ono are usually caught by trolling with jets, heavy leadheaded feather jigs or plastic trolling plugs. The strike of an ono on a plug is the most exciting to watch. The plug splashes across the surface behind the boat. To catch it, the ono must race across the surface with it. We missed opening weekend for trout fishing on Kauai by several weeks. The season lasts for only two months, August and September, and over half the fish caught during this period are caught on opening weekend. We knew that if any fish were left they would be very wary after eluding the hundreds of fishermen who fished there the weeks prior to our arrival. Our guide and resident expert on trout fishing, Bob Hee, was even more discouraging, however he cheerfully volunteered to take us to the good spots. Also called the “twenty times” knot by some, it is undoubtedly the king of complicated knots. But if you need a knot that is 100% then you’re looking for a Bimini Twist. This knot was and is still used the most by offshore trollers but lately has found favor with shorecasters and fly fishermen alike. Sometimes when tying this knot you wish you had an extra pair of hands and four pairs of knees. But if you’re looking to use the knot for spinning then it shouldn’t be too much of a problem. It’s been an up and down month for Waianae fishermen as marlin appeared as predicted. Some days they would hit well and other days not at all. Many came in empty-handed and frustrated. It looks like the Allison tuna are gone again for another year. However, Aug. 8th was a particularly productive day when most of the bilifish that came in to the Waianae Boat Harbor were over 300 pounds. First into the loading pier early in the morning was Neil Katada’s beautiful blue KAREN K. Mel Shitagi had landed a husky longnose estimated at over 400 pounds. Hookena was the destination. It is situated approximately twenty miles from Kailua-Kona on the Big Island. It has one of the largest fleet of Hawaiian canoes on the island and the smallest white sand-beach from which they all launch. The beach is neatly secluded in a small natural harbor that was originally the home of the once legendary “Cooper Landing”. The small pier from which cattle was shipped is now long gone and the only thing that remains is the barnacle-encrusted pier pilings. The water is as clear as gin and the porpoise schools that were abundant during Hookena’s heydays are still patrolling its shoreline. With the recent shark attacks on the Florida coastline areas appearing in the media, the subject of new shark repellents is of current interest. Whether or not they are practical or available in the near future will have to be determined. A fine steel mesh diving suit is now being forecast as the answer to shark attacks. The suit creator, Jeremiah Sullivan, recently sported the 16-lb. suit in a swarm of blue sharks in Southern California waters. One hungry seven-footer slipped up alongside, tentatively tasted the steel mesh and quickly fled. Ron and Valerie Taylor, who are famous for their shark research, have also tested the suits in Australian waters with a number of shark species present, such as hammerheads and grey reef sharks, and reported the same results. This knot is ideal for application with a double line. All you do is form a loop with the big leader material (for spinners it is usually 80-120-lb. test), make it sufficiently long enough to work with and then take the double line ends and feed it through the loop. Next, hold the loop tightly and start wrapping back up the leader loop with the double line. About six-to-seven times is sufficient. Once you’ve reached the leader loop you tuck the double line into the leader loop. Now, holding the double line ends, pull the heavy leader till it snugs down the double line. As you can see from the preceding story, Captain Patrick Nelson of the CUTTY SARK tied Captain Bart Miller’s 12-year-old record of five marlin boarded in one day. Who would imagine it would require only twenty days to duplicate the catch again? Captain Jack Prettyman, operating the KEALEA, a charter boat also docked in Honokahau Harbor, brought in five Pacific blues on August 24, 1981. After a fish-filled month of July, the fishermen on the Haleiwa side were looking forward to an even better August. Last year it was in early August that the ahi made their last strong “run” of the year. Unfortunately August has come and gone and the ahi were never found. The local boys around the harbor are now gearing for the annual marlin action and most have given up hope on the yellowfin showing up this year again. Without the ahi around to pay fuel bills, fewer boats are gambling on a day of fishing and the fish catch reflects this.
