It was a good day for a tournament. Everyone started the day in good spirits and with high expectations, but Ronnie Ellison had the contest pretty much wrapped up by 9 a.m. He camped out on Condominium Point in the basin and in short order landed a 4-lb. 10-oz. and a 5-lb. 12-oz. largemouth. Undaunted, the champions took up the challenge. Sid Sato came along next with a 1-lb. 6-oz. bass. A short time later, Alan Towner weighed in a 1-lb. 8-oz and a 2-lb. 10-oz. bass. Ronnie Ellison pulled in another bass weighing 3 lbs. 9 oz., giving him a total weight at that point of 13 lbs. 15 oz. Everybody knew that would be hard to beat, but the champions kept on plugging anyway. Alan Towner weighed in…

■ On January 31, 1981, the Honolulu Advertiser’s Neighbor Island Edition carried an article concerning a proposed plan to institute a shark bounty for the waters immediately surrounding the island of Maui. This plan was drawn up by Ron Yoshida, an agent for Sea Grant on Maui, and involved the MAP (the Marine Advisory Program). The article went on to say that the local fishermen would be offered 30 cents a pound for the sharks which are brought in providing they are in marketable condition. These sharks would be delivered to Mr. Bruce Johnson of Fresh Island Fish, a local fish dealer, where it would then be processed and prepared for shipment to California. The reason for the California market is simple, at the present time no shark flesh market…

RAMPS OPEN AT NEW WAIANAE BOAT HARBOR Seven launching and retrieving ramps have recently been opened at the new Waianae Boat Harbor directly across from the old harbor at Pokai Bay. The first boat to launch early on the morning of Jan.30th was Sam Kaliko’s KAHILI K. The second phase of the harbor is practically completed. A formal opening will be scheduled soon for the opening of the three mooring piers. Mooring requests for berths may be obtained from the Department of Transportation, Harbors Division or by calling Rose DeMello at 841-6552. Waianae - residents may pick up a mooring request from Waianae Coast Fishing, 85-794 Farrington Hwy. in Waianae. Several new wash-down stations are situated between the ramps and the highway. Well, it’s hard to believe but we are 3 months into the new year and if we use the marlin capture figures from the Kona charter fleet, a whopping 107 during the past 30 days, it promises to be a great year for the offshore angler. While we are on the subject of charters, I’d like to squelch a rumor that has been spreading regarding the new and proposed regulations governing the use of small boat harbors. The rumor is that visiting charter boats hired for fishing tournaments may not be allowed to use small boat harbor facilities where they do not have registered berths. “Not true,” says Dave Parsons, state boating manager. ■ Last month we began a discussion of the care and maintenance needed to get the maximum mileage out of star drag trolling reels. This month, we’ll continue that discussion with an examination of several ways to correct problems and improve the performance of the typical Penn Senator reel. We mentioned drag washers and the frequent attention they need to overcome corrosion. Something we mentioned in passing deserves reinforcing here. Tackle stores carry stainless steel washers, which require less maintenance than the brass washers that were the standard equipment on early Senators. This was the first “Big Catch” for the Aina Kai Lani of Waianae. The 19’ Glasply Cutty was purchased in May 1980 and caught a 175-lb. ahi on November 16, 1980 18 miles out of Nanakuli Valley. ■ The smiling faces of three Hawaii fishermen hoisting three king salmon greeted the new year on the cover of the January Hawaii Fishing News. The accompanying article announced that over 600 Hawaii anglers had fished Alaska for king salmon in 1980. Add to that the large number of fishermen from Hawaii who visited other fishing ports along the mainland’s Pacific Coast, and you can see why we are excited about the publication of an excellent new book PACIFIC SALMON FISHING, by Allen Bonenko. COUNCIL ACTIVITIES ELECTIONS HCDC officers for 1981 were elected at the Febuary 3rd meeting. • Fishing is excellent — the best — I can’t keep up with Lahaina’s catch. Since mid-December, the marlin have been coming in and in and in. The tourists are here and the billfish are camping out anywhere between the Kahoolawe light and Ka’ena Point. YES! Lahaina fishermen are high and hot. Daily the big ones are brought to the scales. Everyone has been attacked and everyone is catching. At least 90 billfish have been taken in Maui County waters. The AERIAL II has captured 38 billfish in 39 days. According to Captain Chris Rose, their run began on the 31st of December with a 265-pound blue along with a 30-pound mahimahi and 36-pound ono. New Year’s Day saw the AERIAL II fly two blue flags into the harbor. The…

■ The first event in this year’s Hawaiian tournament calender has already been held as we go to press with the March issue — and that Hawaii Big Game Fishing Club event (President’s Day) heralds the start of the longest tournament fishing season in Hawaii’s history. This month some islanders will venture south to the Bay of Island’s International Billfish Tournament - representing the Maalaea Boat and Fish Club, the Hawaii Big Game Fishing Club and the Kona Mauka Trailers. Catches in the Bay of Islands since the season started in December are running 3 times better than in any previous year. ■ This true story all started on a cold Friday night when my fishing buddy, Warren Kam, dropped by to talk story and to see what was on the agenda for Saturday. AROUND THE LAKE January was a disappointment to most people because the water hadn’t risen to the level required for a good bass spawn. In fact, it was so low at one point that it got a bit tricky trying to use the launch ramp. During the latter part of the month we did get a little rain, and the water rose about 5 feet, but this only served to muddy up the upper ends of both forks. Conditions like that can contribute to a fish kill rather than a spawn. The catfish are especially vulnerable because they will head for that cold inflowing water and the silt clogs their gills. A couple of months ago Ernie Theodore talked me into using 2 lb. test line for whatever fishing I do.
