■ Six Kaneohe boats journeyed across the Kaiwi and Pailolo Channels to try their luck in the 1980 Lahaina Jackpot Tournament. None of us placed in the top five, but we sure had a lot of fun. Naturally we had our own cocktail party nightly on the grounds of the Lahaina Library. The fishing wasn’t all that bad. We all had our share of marlin action, the majority being lost after long battles. The well-known skipper of the POPO TWO, Capt. Ruben Ching landed three marlin, the largest being almost in the money. He also landed some mahimahi and otaru aku. Capt. Buddy Yee Hoy lost a nice pacific blue, when the hook broke in half. Taking the club’s boat, we headed up for the North Bridge. We figured on having a relaxing day, but as it turned out, the motor went on strike and I wound up having my exercise for the day paddling downstream. Halfway down, Hans and I met up with Lynn Spurlin who thought he had a 13 inch bass. But as luck would have it, the fish fell short by ½ inch. Later on in the day he had another bass that fell short by a quarter inch, even with the efforts at keeping the fish as still and flat as possible. Well, better luck next time! POTENTIAL WORLD RECORD ULUA FOR HAWAII BIG ISLE ANGLER Kinney Louie of Hilo Casting Club has applied for Hawaii’s second world record ulua. Kinney was on an outing to South Point on the Big Island when he captured these two ulua. One at 50½-lbs taken at 11:30 p.m. October 12th. The potential record fish struck at 12:15 a.m. on the 13th and officially weighed in at 110-lbs. If Kinney’s 110-lb ulua (lowly trevally) is accepted by the IGFA it will bump from the 80-lb class line record a 1064b fish taken on October 20, 1978 by angler Harold Collins of Watamu, Kenya. ■ October is Maui County tournament time and the marlin proved extremely cooperative. As one entrant reported after day two of the 4th Annual Lahaina Jackpot Fishing Tournament, “The north shore of Molokai is lousy with big billfish.” During the first week of October, a major portion of the Lahaina fleet was chartered for an afternoon by a convention held at the Hyatt. Ten captains got together and decided to hold the First Annual Break The Pox Fishing Tournament. Since mid-September, no substantial fish has been brought to the Lahaina Harbor scales. Each boat contributed $10 to the pot. The purse totaled $100. The boat landing the largest flag fish would take it all. ■ The operative word for boats trolling out of Haleiwa on the north shore has been marlin. All up and down the coastline from Kaena Point to Kahuku Point, billfish have been coming up with great regularity during the months of October and November. Lance Lauro was one lucky angler who connected with a longnose in October, his being a husky striped marlin of 185 pounds. This fish was taken aboard the KIN! MALIA, a 22-foot Glasply owned by lance’s dad, Dave. Gil Abrigo of the GRECH L. has also had some good marlin luck with fishing pal Ray Lungren along for the action. ■ The morning looked nice with the Tradewinds blowing ten to twenty knots and the bay had its usual gentle chop. We were hoping it would stay that way as we launched the skiff. My partner, Warren Kam, and myself, reworked a 12-foot aluminum hull that he used to i lay net with. It was lying on the side of his house collecting leaves until we put our heads together and got I the project moving. We added a 4-horsepower out-board motor, some PCV pipe for rod holders, a paint ; job, and a name. The name of the skiff was “The Papio” because that was our primary game. No one can sleep the night before. I’ve written this article in response to a letter by Earl S. Isobe (H.F.N. Oct. 1980—Hanapa‘a Holoholo Style) requesting angling information on small game fish which inhabit our reefs. Four of these fish, the hahalalu, (pronounced halalu), aholehole, moi, and moano are taken on similar rigs and baits. Fist of all, I want to emphasize that I am strictly an ultra-light spinner and use no larger than 2-lb. test main line, a 4½’ Graphinite rod and an ultra-light spinning reel. I’ve been using 2-lb. test for seven years and with it I have caught many’ of the fish that I talk about in this article. ■ Without hesitation divers classify the shark as the most dangerous animal in the sea. The majority of skin and scuba divers, however, have not seen, much less been attacked by a dangerous shark. The barracuda, swift and horrifying with its sharp teeth, is usually only interested in divers wearing shiny objects. Other animals such as the octopus and giant clam are only deadly in Jules Verne’s Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. The animal which has inflicted more pain, ruined more dive suits and left divers in countless hours of agony is the lowly sea urchin. There were a lot of bass in the 4 pound class being taken on live bait and plastic worms, plus a 5 pound 7-ouncer that I caught off Kunia Point on October 3rd. Fortunately for me, it held up as Big Fish of the Month even though several people (myself included) reported hooking bass of over 5 pounds but not being able to boat them.
