The best is that a jig bouncing along behind a gurgling bobber will make papio bite when nothing else will even catch their eye. The commotion made by the bobber attracts their attention. ■ Nothing is ever the same in fishing and nothing stays the same for very long in the waters off the Kona Coast. Those who fish those waters regularly have an opportunity to observe the subtle changes on a day-to-day basis and have a small advantage over infrequent fishermen and visitors from the other islands. ■ Because many people may be unfamiliar with how to tag and release billfish, I have put together the following sets of instructions. One tells how to tag and release small fish (under 100 pounds), the other how to tag and release larger marlin. Boat Days is Hawaii’s first in and out of the water boat show. Staged at Piers 7, 8 & 9 of Honolulu’s historic Aloha Tower complex, Boat Days will have sail and power boat exhibits as its nucleus, and will go on to include related boating gear, water sports equipment, facilities, clothing and accessories on display. Festive Boat Days entertainment will be ongoing; good food and cold beverages are guaranteed available throughout show hours. ■ 7,486 pounds of marlin meat were brought to the hook by the men of the Lahaina fishing fleet in July of ’79. The billfish were everywhere with the most unusual strike aboard an avon trolling in the roadstead. 29 were taken, most of them on the inside run between Lanio-poko and the third canefield. The gamefish have invaded Maui waters in force the first half of 1980. The story is that it hasn’t been this good in ten years. July, therefore, was looked upon with GREAT EXPECTATIONS. The first two weeks were dry with the occasional ono and mahimahi boated, and marlin strike reported. Captain Mike Kearns broke the spell aboard the ALOHA IPO. ■ “The Hawaiian Invitational Allison Tuna Tournament” is certainly one of a kind. Alana McKinney covered this tournament closely, but I would like to share my views and experiences in fishing a light tackle tournament, only two of its kind in the state. (The other is, of course, the renown Billfish Tournament in Kona.) The HIATT is a sporting tournament of friendly competition where the sole purpose and satisfaction come from the accomplishment of landing a large fish on light tackle. ■ Hawaii’s offshore fishing tournaments share one thing in common. They all use radio roundups to keep officials (as well as participants) informed on the daily catches. You can use these radio reports to your best advantage and glean a good deal of useful information from them, with a little pre-planning, and some careful attention to the details. The standard radio roundup format is to have each team report in by team number at certain set times of the day, listing the area fished, and the number of strikes, hookups and fish on board. Any fish landed are then detailed as to angler, line test and fighting time. ■ On May 9th of this year Captain “Haole Boy” Bean had a full day charter like many others he has run on his 38’ LOIKA. The bite was slow. They had been towing a live bait around off the OTEC buoy, 18 miles north of Keahole Point all day without so much as a wind strike. The day was coming to an end. In a desperation last move, used by many captains after surface baits prove ineffective, Haole Boy chose to “sink” his bait allowing the aku to swim downward. This technique occasionally attracts a deep swimming, errant marlin or ahi, and if nothing else works, it is often chosen as a last resort. The rules for the 1980 Chuck Machado Luau Jackpot Fishing Tournament are a modification of the rules prescribed by the International Game Fish Association. The basic rules which apply in virtually every major tournament in the world, and for any catch if it is to be considered for world record status. One rule seems to be particularly difficult for many tournament fishermen to understand—that is the rule regarding the use of a lure Which has already caught a fish. The rules state that for a catch to be considered eligible it must be presented to the judges with the complete leader and any double line used at the time of the capture. ■ There can never be enough of a good thing, especially when that good thing is a gamefish. A case in point is the swordfish. Five years ago sporting publications trumpeted the discovery of a new technique that made fishing for the elusive swordfish as easy as shooting ducks in a pond. Anglers who had fished for swordfish all their lives without success, suddenly discovered they could catch as many as seven fish a trip. Before the discovery of night-fishing for swordfish with lights off the Florida Coast, big-game fishermen estimated that the catching of a broadbill swordfish on hook and line was a ten thousand to one chance. ■ The 3rd Annual Territorial Savings Waianae Coast Trolling Tournament held August 15th and 16th was blessed with good trolling water with the fish close to shore near Pokai Bay. As this tournament was a minijackpot, cash prizes were awarded for the five largest fish with only marlin and ahi counting for the jackpot purses. Michael Freitas of the. Sand Island-based KONA KAI ran away with first place with $2160.00 for his 294%-pound pacific blue billfish. In second place was the BELSIE KAI with owner Neal Joseph bringing in a 197%-pound longnose which earned his team $864.00. The only lady winner, Maile Wilkinson of Wailupe Circle, went home with $648.00 for landing a 183%-pound Allison tuna putting her team aboard the PENN YAN in third place. Fourth place was captured…

■ Steve Zuckerman has made a regular habit of visiting Kona and topping established world records. Last summer it was 20 pound test records for marlin (378% pounds) and ahi (211 pounds). In previous summers he has established records on everything from 12 pound test to 30 pound test. This summer Steve had two goals. One was to take a beast on 30 pound test and return the world record for pacific blue marlin to Kona. The other was to be the first man in history to take a pacific on 6 pound test line.
