For most of Hawaii’s offshore fishermen, a good set of lures is enough to assure reasonable success. For many, though, the ability to rig live bait has brought added success, and that skill is developed and saved for the moments when it is known to produce. For fishing tournaments, especially in Kona, it is a skill that is virtually a requirement. The first key to developing a technique is practice. Deep sea fishing, once considered a man’s sport, is just not that way anymore. In fact, some of the best anglers are women. Sorry fellows, but that’s the word of some of the sportfishing charter captains at Kewalo Basin in Honolulu. And they should know, for some of their boats average 350 days a year at sea. Spending a day at sea on a sportfishing boat had always intrigued me, and since I had run the gamut of the usual sports, I headed for Kewalo Basin (between Waikiki and downtown Honolulu). Well, the first big deluge of winter hit here a short while back, and the ol’ lake is back up brimfull again. Most of us have just about forgotten what it looks like in that condition—ail that water in there just looks unnatural somehow. Evidently that downpour caught the bridge building crew with their drawers down as well. It appears like one of their cranes got caught out on a platform over the water when it started to rise. As soon as all that diesel fuel finishes leaking out and floats away, we should have some pretty fair bass structure along that stretch. COUNCIL ACTIVITIES NEW OFFICERS INSTALLED HCDC officers for 1980, voted into office at the January meeting, were officially installed at the February 5th meeting, with the exception of the Recording Secretary position. The new officers are: Ron Bendele, president; Liz Kane, vice president; Paula Wallace, corresponding secretary and Carol Burger treasurer. HCDC OUTSTANDING DIVER OF THE YEAR BANQUET Cynde Sinor, Chairperson of the Banquet Committee, confirmed that the menu is set and is steamship round of beef for the main course. She needs to know the names of the individual from each club who will be making a club presentation. Several years ago myself and a close fishing buddy, Cliff Cassity, purchased a fine old 27-foot diesel powered Funai sampan from Tommy Rietow. She had quite a reputation as a fish catching boat and still does. She carried the name KIPEKONA at the time but Tommy kept the name for his next sampan and we renamed her KOMOHANA. Since the boat was berthed at Hawaii Kai Marina, we fished the Penguin Banks quite frequently. Initially we did a great deal of trolling and fared well, but it soon became apparent that if the boat was to pay for itself, bottom fishing was the way to go. Almost without exception, the Waianae fishing story is all about small fish lately, especially small striped billfish or spearfish. With the launching ramps so full of sand that boats cannot be retrieved without a 4-wheeled-drive vehicle, few fishermen have been out hunting at all. The surf line waves have been tremendous, but once past the breakers, fishermen find the water settling down into long, glassy rollers, far apart. David Yingst and his dad, Chester, have braved the deep sand twice lately, both times coming back to Pokai Bay with fish in the box. On Jan. 26th, Dave picked up a dandy 52-lb spearfish. Weil spinners, this issue I at last have a story to tell, and a good one. I went on a very successful spinning trip, and as you may well know, we ail have our ups and downs here in Hawaii. The only thing we are really lucky at on every trip we go on is that we live in Hawaii. For only here can we enjoy the real beauty of fishing. Catch or not, just working the Hawaiian coastlines can be a beautiful experience. I’ve been doing it for almost ten years and it never gets old. I would like to welcome another person into our ranks. After a mild February and the approach of Spring, there may be a feeling that winter storms are past. This is not entirely true. First, the average February is milder than other winter months. Second, winter is not over. Weather-wise, there are only two seasons in Hawaii — winter and summer. Winter begins sometime in October and ends sometime in April. Although winter storms can still intrude into Hawaiian waters, there will be more good weather days than bad weather days in March. The usual winter storms mentioned and discussed in earlier articles are: cold front with strong Kona winds, upper trough with heavy rain, gusty trade winds and high northwest swell and surf. If you want to learn how little you know about almost everything, spend some time with a bunch of eager kids. Somehow a morning on a fishing boat searching for excitement winds a bright youngster up to his most inquisitive turn of mind. Never mind that the fish aren’t biting. There are enough different creatures tickling the surface to keep little tongues wagging incessantly with questions. Like flying fish, for example.
