Almost without exception, the Waianae fishing story is all about small fish lately, especially small striped billfish or spearfish. With the launching ramps so full of sand that boats cannot be retrieved without a 4-wheeled-drive vehicle, few fishermen have been out hunting at all. The surf line waves have been tremendous, but once past the breakers, fishermen find the water settling down into long, glassy rollers, far apart.
David Yingst and his dad, Chester, have braved the deep sand twice lately, both times coming back to Pokai Bay with fish in the box. On Jan. 26th, Dave picked up a dandy 52-lb spearfish. Normally the marlin is the largest in a catch, but this day Dave caught a heavier ono. It weighed in at 54-lbs!
