Well, it seems that the windy and rainy season is upon us again, with the lake beginning to rise a little once again. Unfortunately, the Waialua Sugar Company is still apparently pulling water fairly heavily, since the lake level immediately starts to drop again shortly after every rise due to the rain. It could be that they’re holding the level down to facilitate the work on the second half of the new bridge. At present, the work crew is emplacing the formwork for the foundations of the two large concrete piers that support the bridge. This involves dredging out two large pits in the bottom of the lake, cofferdaming around them, and emplacing the formwork by hand. If the water level rises very high, it will spill over the steel…

Would you believe they are raising mahimahi in swimming pools at Oceanic Institute in Waimanalo on Oahu? Would you believe that mahimahi reach sexual maturity in less than six months? Would you believe that it is conceivable that several million juvenile mahimahi could be produced in less than a year’s time, with the techniques now being developed? Would you believe that there are two species of mahimahi in Hawaii, and that cross breeding of these two similar varieties could conceivably produce a “super mahimahi?” Well, all of the above things are real, and the potential for mahimahi culture is excellent according to Oceanic Institute’s Randy Hagood, the project chief for the mahimahi experiments. Then, starting in 1958, large numbers of sac-fry were air shipped to Hawaii from Tishomingo, Oklahoma and Cedar Bluff, Kansas for stocking various areas throughout the State. Results to date indicate that the species has become an important addition to the freshwater gamefish fauna of Hawaii. There are two groups of freshwater catfish in North America. One group includes the smaller species, which possess poison glands associated with the pectoral spines; while members of the other group (which includes the channel catfish) have no poison glands. It was the time of “wildcat” certification cards. During the 1960’s, certification associations sprang up and “wildcat” instruction started to disappear. Although the days of “wildcat” certification have all but disappeared, there is still a situation that occurs from time to time. I am referring to the dangerous practice of certified divers attempting to teach non-certified people to dive. Diving instruction carries many responsibilities and persons that are trained as instructors have undergone many hours of classroom as well as water sessions, learning important techniques.
