For one dozen days in November, Lahaina fishermen went on a spree catching approximately 30 mahimahi, 15 ono and 6 marlin. The rest of the month, either gale warnings or an extreme lull in the charter industry kept many of the fleet in their slips. The action began on the 6th off Kamaiki Point. The JUDY ANN fished the area and boated two small mahi’s while the AERIAL II battled the largest billfish brought to the Lahaina Harbor scales in November. Captain Alan Price reported the 245-lb Pacific blue marlin went after a bullett jethead 1½ miles off the point. Curiously, when checking on the history of the split cane rod, it seemed that the evolution of the six strip bamboo rod began most probably with the advent of the medieval “Long Bow.” Seemingly its craftsmen had the knowledge and the specialized tool to create the crude “fishing poles”, using the same material that went into building the Long Bow. The techniques of rod construction can be traced as far back as 1496 in a book entitled “The Book of Saint Albans” by Juliana Berners. This enterprising book detailed the process of building one’s own rod using hazel, willow or ash. Such as the raw material used in building the earliest fishing rods. The Department of Transportain (DOT) of the State of Hawaii, has developed a plan to curtail the insidious increase in the number of charter fishing boats in Hawaii. The plan seek-to assure that captains presently working island waters will be guaranteed no future. The plan sets up a permanent status quo; many will even be refused the right to upgrade their vessels. “The plan” is no joke … it is dead serious … the “Ayatollah DOT has captured the charter fishing fleet and has demanded a well as certain concessions concerning the number of boats that will be allowed to operate in “their harbors.” On New Year’s Day 1980, the charter operations of Maalaea and Lahaina will be the first to feel the wrath of a bureaucracy run amuck. A previous article in Hawaii Fishing News highlighted the possible problem areas that resulted after the introduction of taape to Hawaiian waters back in June, 1958. Since skin and SCUBA divers spearfish to supplement their table fare or to sell their catch on a commercial basis, it is timely to look into this subject. A recent public workshop of three hours in length was held at the McCully-Moiliili Library. It was attended by more than 100 persons, which demonstrates the extreme interest in this fish. Many recommendations came out of this workshop, including one to encourage a concerted effort between the University of Hawaii, Sea Grant College Marine Advisory Program, and State agencies to determine “what needs to be done,” if anything, with this species of fish. POKAI BAY BONANZA STILL TAKING ENTRIES The Pokai Bay Bonanza Jackpot Fishing Tournament entry list is rapidly filling up to its limit of 100 boats. More than half of the teams already accepted are new boats that were not in the tournament last year. Boats that were entered last year were given a grace period up to Dec. 1st to send in their $100 deposit to hold their place in the 1980 session. After Dec. 1st, it was first come, first serve. The Hawaii Big Game Fishing Club in the last few years has established a reputation for having bang-up get togethers to award prizes for its many tournaments held throughout the year.
