Having decided to finally retire my Mitchell 406 reel, I spent considerable time deliberating which reel would best suit my needs. Having looked at weight, line capacity, drag smoothness, parts availability and last but not least, price. A rapid love developed for the Daiwa GS 20. Gone now are the days of the clackity clack and the jerky drag. The GS 20 is about the quietest and smoothest reel in a moderate price range. One note—as I have noticed many people, after making their cast and having their lure hit the water, they instinctively reach for the handle and clunk, close the bail. Be nice to the Daiwa. For all of you who have tried spinning, or have though about it but feel it’s too much like work, or any other excuse you may have, I’d like to offer a few suggestions that if you will follow them, I’m sure you will see what you have been missing. Pick a nice day when you have nothing to do. Pick up your spinning pole that you’ve been using to dunk with, and get in your carand drive until you see a nice place that looks to you like it has fish. Waianae fishing action has been pretty spotty over the past month with only a few really hot days on record. Ahi have been found all the way up and down the coastline, popping up out of the water, but they haven’t been too anxious to strike. Our fall run of Pacific blues has finally begun, however. These usually come in at this time of year with the majority weighing between 150 and 250-lbs. Checking the fish list, we find three boats which go out fairly consistently that have brought in their share. These are Mel and Wendy Lopez’ WENDY L., Crazy Willy Failautusi’s KANANI J. and our KAMALII KAI TOO. Expensive clean-up costs are passed on to the pollutor/consumer/taxpayer which is all of us. The cumulative effects of even minor pollution can be harmful over a long enough period. LOGO DESIGN COURTESY WESTERN SPORTS TOURNAMENTS Since March of this year, the fishermen in Hawaii have had the opportunity to win first place purses totaling over $95,000, not to mention side bets, small calcuttas and all the many money prizes that crop up in smaller tournaments across the State. 1979 was truly a jackpot year. It was a year of several tournament firsts as well. Hawaii’s first tuna only jackpot, the First Annual Kona Ahi Tournament, was held in June and 75 boats turned out with a total of 218 anglers. The following is a diving story by a small group of Ka Imi Kai divers who journeyed to the Galapagos Islands. The Galapagos are a group of islands in the Pacific on the equator which are in the possession of Equador. (Editor) Just after breakfast, our 70-foot motor sailer, ENCANTADA, nears Gordon Rocks in the Galapagos Islands. There are two rocks, side by side, with cliffs several stories high and the combined length of a football field. The ocean is dark blue with a three foot chop; a little calmer in the lee of the rocks. Our nine divers are checking their cameras and suiting up, most using half wetsuits.
