BILLFISH Billfish by Charles O. Mather is a must for any angler’s library. Besides being enjoyable reading, it gives much scientific fact about the major classes of billfish. It also answers all those questions you’ve had about growth, hearing, intelligence and general physiology of all billfish with a sword on the upper jaw. These include sailfish, marlin, broadbill and spearfish with many pictures of each variety. This does not include the sawfish which is related to the shark family. It is amazing to realize that a billfish may lay 5 million eggs and of these, only about ten will reach maturity. One way to make the fish come up and start hitting is to have a Territorial Savings and Loan Tournament. Or so it seemed to a delighted crowd of anglers over the Admission Day weekend. Last year’s First Waianae Coast Trolling Tournament produced an avalanche of fish after several weeks of dry hunting. Most of this August had gone by with tournament officials biting their nails and rolling their eyes at the ocean with a few silent prayers going out for fish. The same thing happened all over again this year. Tournament rules stated that all fish must be caught within a 50-mile radius of Oahu. To whom it may concern, I would like some information on a state record ahi caught on July 11, 1979. My stepfather and I were on an Island Charter Fishing Cruise aboard the AU KAI when my stepfather caught a 265-lb ahi. We looked it up in the records and the biggest one listed was 261-lbs, caught by a woman last year. This is the state record; do you know anything about these records? They (the photographer) said that they (HFN staff) would put this picture in Hawaii Fishing News, but I haven’t seen it. I am wondering if they are prejudiced or something. Of the 600 species of sharks found world-wide, less than a dozen are considered to be “sporting,” that is active enought to put up an interesting fight. Which shark is the best fighter is a topic often debated in the sportfishing world, but many anglers agree that the Mako shark, the Whaler shark, and the Great White shark are the top three. The top angler of the 1979 Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament was a 17-year-old high school senior from Reno, Nevada. Young Christian McMillan claims to have fished for most of his 17 years, and his prowess is plainly visible simply by looking at his singlehanded accomplishment. On the second day of the 21st HIBT, McMillan landed a 462-lb Pacific blue marlin on 50-lb test line, vaulting his family’s Nevada Gamefish Club into first place with 693 points. That fish was taken on Captain Kip Taylor’s HAPPY TIMES II in one hour and two minutes. The rainbow trout fishing season at Kokee, Kauai opened at 5:30 a.m. on August 4th, 1979. This season, exclusive to Kauai, provides the sportfisherman with an experience he could not ordinarily obtain unless he flew over 2,000 miles to the West Coast. As an avid freshwater fisherman, I had waited ten long months for the season to arrive. In our cabin, and I imagine in cabins and tents elsewhere, people were reluctantly getting out of warm sleeping bags and into the cool, morning air. The overnight temperature was 56 degrees. For the mainland and foreign teams that venture to Kailua-Kona from all parts of the nation and the world to participate in the Hawaiian international Billfish Tournament, everything begins on Sunday, with the charter boat draw. After joining the teams from Hawaii at registration on Sunday morning and sitting through hours of introductory remarks, rules and orientation, in the ballroom of the Hotel King Kamehameha, little white ping pong bails bearing the numbers of the teams and a line listing five different boats, are drawn from a koa bowl. Dear Jim: I’ve read your recent articles about when fish bite with great interest. Talk of the influence of moon and tides on fish and fishing doesn’t seem logical to me. How could a one foot change of tide even be noticed by a fish on the bottom, and why should a fish be less hungry on a day when the moon is full than on a day when there is no moon (or vice-versa according to whatever conclusion anybody thinks he has reached?)
