The Division of Fish and Game, Department of Land and Natural Resources, announced today the opening of the annual rainbow trout fishing season in the Kokee Public Fishing Area on Kauai beginning Saturday, August 4,1979 and continuing through Sunday, September 30,1979. Anglers may fish daily for a period of 16 consecutive days from August 4 through August 19; thereafter, for the remainder of August and throughout the month of September, trout fishing is permitted only on Saturdays, Sundays and State holidays. Prospective fishermen must have valid 1979-80 Freshwater Fishing Licenses before fishing in the Kokee PFA. Good fishing can usually be expected from all of the fishing areas during the opening weekend of the season, particularly in the Kawaikoi Stream, Waiakoali Stream, Koaie Stream, Waialae Stream, Puu Lua Reservoir and…

The recently organized Maui Trailerboat Club held its first trolling tournament the weekend of July 14 and 15, and if they can always promise the kind of tournament the first one became, they are bound to be the most popular fishing club in Maui County. The two-day tournament attracted some 95 fishermen registered to fish in 26 different boats. The one-week postponement of the event allowed for several additional entries and probably made the difference between a spectacular two-day fishing tournament and a lackluster one. The total fish catch and total weight of one fish in particular is what made this Maui tournament so amazing. In two days of fishing a total of 2,072-lbs of ahi were taken, a total of 13 fish. The Cornhusker Billfish Club of Nebraska ran away with most of the prizes in the 6th Annual Hawaiian Invitational Allison Tuna Tournament with the shining star of the whole tournament being pretty 14-year-old Debbie Gottner. Along with her proud teammates, father Raymond and brother Stephen, Debbie outfished every other group, winning first place with 2623.3 points. They had a total of ten ahi and two marlin. Debbie also won a Governor Ariyoshi Trophy for Highest Scoring Female with 1035.2 points. Her personal total fish count was five ahi and one marlin which helped to pull them through as Highest Scoring Out of State Team. On top of this, Debbie came away with a $250 award given by the Bike Stop Sports Center of Waianae for the ahi closest to 125-lbs.…

The first successful attempt to induce spawning in tunas was announced by Richard S. Shomura, Director of the Honolulu Laboratory, Southwest Fisheries Center, National Marine Fisheries Service, Department of Commerce. The tuna known locally as kawakawa and bearing the scientific name “Euthynnus affinis” was successfully induced to spawn for the first time anywhere in shoreside tanks at the Kewalo Research Facility of the Honolulu Laboratory. Conducting the spawning experiments at the Kewalo Research Facility is Dr. Calvin M. Kaya, a visiting fishing scientist on a year’s sabatical leave from Montana State University. Kaya explained that this is the first time a species of tuna has been artifically forced to spawn (by hormone treatment) in captivity anywhere in the world. The Hilo Casting Club will hold a dinner meeting August 21st. The annual election of officers will be conducted at this meeting. The new officers will be installed at the annual awards banquet with offices effective October 1st. CASTING CLINIC On July 1st, members of the Hilo Casting Club got together for a Casting Clinic. Markers were set out at 50, 75 and 100 yards. Although the turnout was light, the girls showed up for lessons from the guys and one of the more fun social events of the year was underway. DEPARTMENT OF FISH & GAME CRACKS-DOWN “TUC SNAGGERS” One of the purposes for which the HFFA was formed is “to encourage all anglers to comply with Hawaii Fish and Game Regulations in securing better fishing privileges and conditions tor fishermen.” Over the years this has been a major concern of many members especially when seeing fishermen snagging spawning tuc, exceeding their bag limit, or after being swamped by a speeding boater. Some irate members have unfairly accused the Dept, of Fish and Game of doing little to stop these illegal acts. But we should remember that the Dept. of Fish and Game has the same objective as we do. There are at least 22 species of seabirds that breed in Hawaii, concentrated mainly on the Leeward Islands to the northwest. Almost all of these nest in varying degrees on the major islands, especially Oahu. But only a handful of species are found in large enough numbers around the major islands to warrant mention. The rest are too scarce and are rarely seen by fishermen. The following is a list of those seabirds which are most common to the major islands, and are of the greatest importance to local fishermen. Most of the proper names are rather cumbersome, giving rise to the practice of using names such as “White Bird” or “Aku Bird,” in place of “Red-tailed Tropicbird” and “Brown Noddy.” Such epithets are quaint, but are sometimes confusing. Would you believe that there are tuna fishermen on the Northeast coast of the United States and Canada who are getting $3,000 for just one tuna? Unbelievable as that may sound, the fact is that for the last two giant bluefin seasons, fishermen in ports from Nova Scotia to Massachusetts have gotten the same price that Hawaii’s ahi fishermen receive. The only difference is that the average size of the giant bluefin in that area of the world is about 760-Ibs and fish weighing over 1,300-lbs have been taken. Is that a number pulled out of the blue? In a way—it’s a number pulled out of the blue Pacific off Tahiti. That was the weight of a Pacific blue marlin caught in April of 1977 by a crew of commercial fishermen on an aku boat. They landed the big fish on a 100-foot rope with a leader made out of chain. The story is that the fish jumped into the boat, broke everything in sight, then jumped back into the ocean, continuing to fight for another hour or two before it finally quit. Until someone makes a bigger claim, this is considered to be the biggest fish (except for sharks) ever caught on any kind of line (including a handline, of course). OAMA MULLIPAE: GOATFISHES WEKE-’A’A (H) i’a sina (S), afolu (S), salmonete (G), spot weke. spot goatfish—yoting called “oama” in Hawaii and “teau” in Guam, Mulloidchthys flavolineatus (Lacepede). DISTRIBUTION: Tropical Indo-Pacific. SIZE: Up to 18 inches (46 cm): “oama” average about 5 inches (13 cm) or less. COLOR: Silvers white with a yellow horizontal band extending from eye to tail; spot as indicated. This tish can change its markings rather rapidly, with additional spots or blotches appearing along the lateral yellow hand which becomes paler and edged with blue. A very common inshore goatfish throughout the Pacific Islands, occurring on or near the bottom in schools or small aggregations over sandy patches that intersperse reel areas. When feeding, it rummages in the sand tot food with its fingerlike chin barbels, leaving…
