The Division of Fish and Game will be holding public meetings on their Statewide Fish Aggregating System project whereby fish aggregating devices (buoys) will be placed in waters around the main Hawaiian islands to attract and congregate tunas and other fishes like mahimahi and ono. The buoys should decrease the amount of time spent by our commercial and recreational fishermen searching for fish schools. After two years of research the Honolulu Laboratory of the National Marine Fisheries Service has shown these buoys to be highly effective. The people of Kona, especially those who have any relationship to fishing, have had a very poor opinion of the Harbors Division of the Department of Transportation. After years of delay and procrastination, they finally built a harbor at Honokohau, making a safe anchorage for the multitude of fishing craft that were endangered for years by anchoring in the treacherous waters of Kailua Bay. However, the only thing you could say about the harbor was “safe”, for, as a haven for boats, it was little else. There was no safe access to craft moored in the harbor. Tourists chartering fishing boats had to have the agility of a mountain goat to even get aboard them. There were no lights, no water, no electricity, no telephone. Charter captains were forced to…

The Hawaii Freshwater Fishing Association. (HFFA) is hosting its Third Annual Tilapia Derby at Lake Wilson on Saturday, August 11,1979. This Derby is for all the young people of Hawaii 15 years of age and under, and is designed to introduce our Hawaii youth to the sport of freshwater fishing. To enter the Derby, just come to the Kemoo Farm parking lot at 8:30 on the morning of Saturday, August 11, and register. There is no registration fee. All entrants must be accompanied by a licensed adult who will supervise the entrant at all times while fishing on Lake Wilson. An adult may register up to five minors. A few single ahi had come up way outside of Kaena Point on the Haleiwa side just recently, making Pokai Bay fishermen search far afield to find them. We were fishing about fifteen miles across the point when Les Osborn called us on the CB radio. “What are you doing way out there?” he asked. “I’m in twenty feet of water and the big ahi are jumping out of the water all around us!” In twenty feet of water? And so it was. Les was laying akule net, and the big Allison tuna were in feeding on the akule. Which proved that the ahi were inside close, but were down so that hardly anyone was catching them. Just two days later, those husky ahi exploded right outside of Pokai Bay…
