The smiling face on the cover of this issue belongs to a long time fishing buddy of mine by the name of Louie Cruz. The picture was taken several months ago while fishing for akule and menpachi off the Waianae Coast. Louie and I started fishing together in the early 50’s and I could probably fill this issue with tales from our early escapades. Once again, the “energy crisis” has fishermen and boaters concerned. Well, actually, “concerned” isn’t really the right way of expressing it. “Scared to death” is more like it—the death of living without your favorite sport. Many fishermen I’ve talked with are pondering whether to sell their boats and buy smaller, more economical models and others, who were contemplating buying newer boats, are wondering whether this is the right time to buy. This article is exclusively for you fishermen who love to use ultra-light gear. I am writing about this fish because I don’t remember anyone writing about catching it on ultra-light equipment. There’s a whole new crop of young fishermen coming on, and every summer we see them out there learning the skill and art of handling themselves out on the water and catching fish at the same time. Often these young people do not fish with their parents, but go out with other experienced anglers. During the last Pokai Bay Club’s Keiki Tournament, Matthew (10), Teresa (8) and Jimmy (7) Wentela fished with Red Gibson and Ramon Quizon on Red’s TUTUS. With the last issue of “Hawaii Fishing News” came the announcement of another jackpot fishing tournament for Hawaii. The newest addition to an already thriving series of tournaments is the Chuck Machado’s Luau Jackpot Fishing Tournament scheduled for Kona September 21-24. For many people the greatest joy and pleasure of fishing is in cooking and eating the catch. Most of Hawaii’s fish are so naturally endowed with flavor and so free of any unnatural contaminants that preparing the catch is as simple as slicing it and serving it raw with a good dipping sauce. CHARTERS HURTING Charter chatter: Maui’s charter boats are still suffering from the prolonged effects of the United Airlines strike and the even more hurting results of the grounding of the nation’s DC-lOs. At a time of year when the fishing is good, and the charter fleet usually gets an opportunity to pay some back bills and run at near capacity for several months, the industry is dying. A casual stroll down Lahaina’s Front Street or a drive past Kihei’s condos will confirm the suspicion of why there is no charter business—there is no one in the hotels, condominiums or even the streets, to go fishing. Mike’s picture of a leaping marlin, shot off Kona, is a perfect introduction to an exciting and important reference work. The IGFA yearbook has become much more than just a compendium of fishing records. After all, not many of us are really ip the record making and breaking business. Rumors have been flying around lately that one of the outer island Jackpot fishing tournaments might be turned into a Calcutta. The question has been raised many times as to what exactly a Calcutta is. Just recently four of our Hawaii fishermen were given the chance to fish in one off the coast of Texas in the Gulf of Mexico. Two of these men were from Waianae. One was Captain Jim Hilton of the KAM ALII KAI TOO and the other was Sam Kapoi, our host for Pokai Bay Bonanza and HIATT parties. Both were invited aboard the COMMODORE, a 38-ft Bertram owned by W.G. Frazier. Mr. Frazier caught his first marlin, a 328½-pounder, aboard the KAM ALII KAI TOO back in 1977.
