The opelu is small but mighty, among the mightiest fish in the sea if it be judged by its true worth on the offshore grounds. If you are what you eat, then the marlin, ahi, ono, mahimahi, ulua, kaku, kahala, kawakawa, aku and all other kinds of fish we love to catch are opelu. Because all count the opelu among their favorite food.
The opelu is a member of the same family as the ulua, amberjack and rainbow runner, though it never gets big enough to be more than a full belly for its large cousins. Occasionally an opelu will grow to two pounds and fourteen or fifteen inches, but most of the fish found in the large schools off Hawaii’s coasts are a foot or less.
