The greatest focus for criticism for sport fishing in Hawaii is the standard practice of killing marlin for market. Conservationists, many of whom are fishermen, feel this is a waste of an important and irreplaceable resource. Yet in Hawaii’s sportfishing tradition, it is an honorable custom, and one which few give any special thought to. It is the billfish, and only the billfish, that is the center of controversy. Few question the killing for food of mahimahi, ono, aku and ahi. Just as these latter species are much higher on the economic scale of market values, the marlin is the unquestionable king of sport fish with a relatively low economic value on a price per pound basis. The Scourge Of Gatun Lake

Gatun Lake is a huge, 105,000 surface acre natural lake that includes part of the route of the Panama Canal. In 1965 the same species of tucunare that was introduced to Hawaii was stocked in a freshwater impoundment that was adjacent to a river that flowed into Gatum Lake. A private company imported the fish specifically for the provision of a sport fishery for its employees and local residents. Tucunare do not occur naturally in Central America but are abundant in nearby Columbia, where the original fingerlings were obtained. Within two years, the tucunare had escaped the confines of the impoundment and by 1970 had begun to spread rapidly in Gatun Lake. Simultaneously, sport fishermen began distributing the fish throughout Panama. The introduction of the tucunare was a spectacular success…

CROOKER’S COOKER

Teriyaki Broiled Chicken Two lb. chicken, halved Blend all the marinade ingredients well and pour the mixlute over the chicken pieces in a shallow dish. Press the chicken pieces into the marinade and turn several times. Marinate overnight. Place the chicken pieces on the rack of a broiler pan and set the pan 6 inches from the heating unit to keep the soy sauce from caramelizing. Brush the pieces with a little oil and broil them for 15 minutes on each side, brushing several times with the marinade. To serve, spoon the pan juices over the chicken. HEART FUND FISHING TOURNAMENT BANQUET AUCTION

The Oahu Fishing Clubs are sponsoring their 12th Annual Heart Fund Fishing Tournament Banquet-Auction at the Empress Restaurant on June 2, starting at 6 p.m. to benefit the Hawaii Heart Association. The evening centers around an auction of outstanding gifts donated by many local merchants. The public is invited to attend and bid on the merchandise. Tickets for the banquet-auction are $12.50 per person and are available at the Nanko Fishing Supply in Kaneohe, Alcorn Radio Service, J & E Fishing Supply, Kida Fishing Supply and at Hobbitat. KONA GOLD JACKPOT TOURNAMENT

The Second Annual Kona Gold Jackpot Tournament is a thing of the past (and for this writer at least, the let down is terrific!) Kona’s weather held until the last moment when rain caused the Awards Night Party to be moved inside the hotel from the Marlin Room lawn at the New King Kamehameha Hotel, resulting in a confused and crowded situation; confused for the first few minutes, and crowded throughout the entire time! The Tournament produced 57 fish at the weighing scales, and approximately 75 others that were not weighed in because of their being lighter than the 20th place fish already on the score board. LOW WATER BASS TACTICS, FISH DEEP

With the summer months almost here again, many of the freshwater reservoirs around the State are beginning to show signs of their usual summer drawdown. Virtually all of the reservoirs on Oahu and Kauai are owned by sugar cane growing interests, and are used primarily for storage of irrigation water. The combination of greater water demand and decreased rainfall during the months of June through September will often reduce your favorite fishing spot to a fraction of its former size—and as the water drops, the fish move, and the fisherman must change his tactics accordinaly. Annual Wahine Fishing Out

May 9th, 1979 was the realization of three girls’ dream, a women’s professional fishing tournament, put on by the women of Kona. Interest in Kona A’Lure was great from the beginning, but entry forms didn’t really start coming in until the last week, Kona style. We turned our backs, and all of a sudden 52 teams were entered for the 2nd Annual Hawaiian Wahine Fishing Tournament. A total of 177 ladies fished the tournament. The ladies’ spirits were high May 8th at Keauhou Country Club for the briefing. Door prizes were given by almost all of Kona’s restaurants. All the teams were on the starting line in Kailua Bay at 7:45 for the Tournament Blessing by Rev. Leon Sterling. I think we all felt the sea would be kind to…

There are many oldtitners who wax nostalgic over some of the structures that house some of our religious, social and commercial activities. They form organizations to “Save the Royal Brewery” or some other antiquated edifice that has seen better days. One of these places which is rich in memories, especially for fishermen, is the auction room in the old Aala Market at King, Iwilei and Nimitz. Every morning from 6 o’clock to 9 o’clock beautiful, fat ahi, marlin, ono, mahimahi were spread all over the cement floor. Further back were tubs and tubs of glistening red fish, uku, opakapaka and akule. Waianae Coast

Waianae Coast waters have been practically deserted for three weeks as most Waianae Coast fishermen have been launching out of Haleiwa and Kaneohe harbors on the North Shore to brave the rougher waters to chase ahi. Some days, the only trailers in the parking lot at Pokai Bay have been from divers for tropical fish. Two of the larger boats moored in the bay have been leaving Pokai at midnight to reach the grounds some 12 to 25 miles off of Kuilima Hotel to cash in on the widespread schools of tuna slowly moving with the bait.
