Of all the freshwater gamefish available to Hawaii’s anglers none is more colorful or harder fighting, pound for pound, than the tucunare. This is one of the more exotic of our gamefish, a greenish-gold fish shaped much like a bass, native to Central America. All those on Oahu and Kauai are descendents of a single pair, which were brought in during the early 1960’s. This first pair was successfully bred, the young were propagated, and in due course they were stocked in the state’s public fishing areas. Since then, this fine gamefish has provided countless hours of enjoyment for Hawaii’s freshwater anglers.
