The large amount of marlin caught in the $34,800.00 Lahaina Jackpot Tournament this year amazed not only the Tournament officials but everyone else involved during the three fishing days, Oct. 28th, 29th and 30th. Where money is involved, it’s not surprising how hard these fishermen fished, mostly in water that was sloppy at best. In fact, the big joke was just how the Weather Bureau would call it today. It made no difference, however. The first day of the Tournament saw only about 15 boats out of the total 87 strike out for “up North” which meant behind Molokai in the open water. Last month we reported on the reaction among Kona’s charter, recreational and handline fishermen to the effect of commercial fishing on the population of aku and ahi in the vicinity of the fish aggregation buoy off Kaiwi Point. All of the fishermen we talked to reported that fishing turned very poor beginning immediately after the visit of the commercial aku boat ANELA of Honolulu. We contacted the National Marine Fisheries Service and asked for comments from fishery biologist Waiter Matsumoto. Walter is the project director for fish aggregation devices and the man responsible for the planning and organization leading to the establishment of these highly successful fish gathering stations. The Hawaii Marine Radio Council, known by its initials HMRC was formed to provide interchange of information between all parties interested in marine communications, navigation and electronics. Of particular importance is the input of information from the user to Federal Communications Commission (FCC). If you have a problem with the FCC regulations as they affect your operations, it is your right to petition FCC for a rule change, or comment on proposed new regulations. New regulations are proposed in a steady stream, and it is most likely that you are only aware of them after they have been enacted and you are cited for a violation. Before I hit upon the idea of stowing my lures in tough plastic bags until called upon for active duty, my tackle box was a mess. Each lure has skirts, hooks and leader enough to tangle up a giant nightmare. Worse yet, a splash from a wave when the tackle box was left open always meant a full scale clean-up job to minimize corrosion between trips. Just to complicate matters further, in my zeal (or indecision) I always manage to bring about thirty more lures than I use! The sandwich bags ward off tangles and corrosive saltwater keeping the lures tackle-shop new looking until used. The clear plastic keeps them on display so I can see at a glance which lure I want. On September 19th, the BETTY C II boated her 40th Pacific Blue Marlin in Kona. Shortly after this the weather in the Alenuihaha Channel improved and I and a crew member, Scott Bickel, took off for Henry Kaiser’s delightful contribution to gracious living—Hawaii Kai on the island of Oahu. We spent the first night in Mahukona where we were fortunate enough to see one of the most beautiful sunsets we had ever seen. We are using one of the photos for our Christmas card this year. The first Lahaina Jackpot Fishing Tournament was a giant step in the annals of gamefishing in Hawaii. It was the first money tournament held in the history of the State. It had it’s naysayers to be sure, but it turned out to be a rousing success in virtually every regard. Maui fishermen probably cherish one aspect of that first time event, more than the opportunity to make all the fishing they have ever done pay off by winning a prize check—and that is the fishing grounds that the three day tournament introduced last year. Maui’s marlin madness is not much more than a memory now, although those hardy fishermen who venture into the Jackpot proven marlin grounds north of Molokai are still getting a few of the billfish. With the departure of the marlin, we have been blessed by the return of the mahimahi and ono that have been present but infrequent in past months. The big mahi in particular are turning heads on some local scales as for quite awhile it was only the cane knife sized dolphin that were being taken. Now the 40-pounders are more and more in evidence, and that means good fishing, good eating and good prices at the market. After one of the deadest fishing months on record, everything busted loose about the end of October with fish of all sizes and kinds coming back in to Pokai Bay. In fact, the good fishing extended all the way around the Island of Oahu, with the Honolulu charter fleet fishing mahimahi schools and having some spectacular action around a huge floating log discovered near Alpha Buoy south of Pearl Harbor. Several floating logs and cargo nets were also found between Kaena Point and Kahuku Point, with boats such as the HAOLE QUEEN, the BARRACUDA and the NANCY O. loading up their fish boxes.
