Dr. Shallenberger is indeed correct when he states that porpoises do steal the live bait trolled by deep sea charter boat fishermen seeking marlin and large tuna, and also steal the catches or bait of bottom fishermen and longline (flagline) fishermen in Hawaiian waters. The series of photographs accompanying this letter, I believe, is convincing proof that such stealing does exist. These underwater pictures of a Pacific bottlenose porpoise stealing an aku (skipjack tuna) were taken by me several years ago on the marlin grounds several miles of Keahole Pt., Kailua-Kona, during a demonstration by Capt. Bart Miller of the Black Bart. I believe they speak for themselves. Two hundred and seventy handicapped young people held their very own fishing tournament at Palkoi Bay, Waianae, August 23rd and had a brand-new “touch and feel” experience that was a first for most of them. This large undertaking was accomplished with the help of more than 200 erned citizens, military personnel and businesses. It was an unqualified success. Long planning went into this idea started by Dr. Mana Maunakea, Planner and Vice President of the Waianae Kai Development, Inc., who is also the founder and Research Planner of “Alu Like,” the Hawaiian Foundation and Camp Kaala. Marlin season is here again. Every September and October, the medium-sized Pacific Blues school up along the Waianae Coast and drive everyone crazy. Most of these marlin weigh in the neighborhood of 100- to 300-lbs, with the majority between 150 and 200. They can be seen basking in the sun on the surface of the water, and when they do strike, often hit in groups of three or more at one time. Frustrations abound, with all kinds of ideas coming forth on how to make those whacky billfish stick. Some suggest longer trailing hooks, and there are always a few who pull out the old nylon rope as an entangling device. Strictly not IGFA, but sometimes a fisherman will try almost anything to hook that wily marlin. Which brings up…

After trying and discarding a half dozen different commercially made bait needles, I’ve finally hit on one that works best for most of the needs of Hawaii’s trailers. The best thing about it is that you can make it yourself in a few minutes. It’s no wonder commercial needles don’t do the job. They are actually made for sewing baits. A bait needle for Hawaiian waters is not used to sew a body cavity closed. Its use would either be to pass a bridle through the eye cavity of a live aku, or to pull a leader up through the body of a long bait like an the ihe (balao, ballyhoo, halfbeak) or an eel. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR To Whom It May Concern, Although I am only 17 I understand your concern over the Ulua, I have yet to catch one so I want to help in the drive to “Save the Ulua.” Whenever I catch a papio I throw it back unless it is bigger than my length of my forearm. I wish that many other fishermen and people alike would do similar things. This would increase the chances of catching it when it becomes bigger. Maui’s marlin madness continues at an unprecedented pace, with the offshore fishermen incredulous at the amount of activity the billfish have offered this year. Maui’s charter Captains have found a real “fishin” hole” in the area known as the “Crater” and even on days when there are no visual clues of fish in the area, marlin are being taken from this pinnacle strewn area in the triangle formed by Maui, Lanai and Kahoolawe. Another hot spot continues to be the area off the lighthouse on the South side of Lanai and in the area between there and Kaena point. Now let’s review some safety related equipment, the most important being the compass. The boater’s safety can depend on the compass. Cruising under conditions with poor visibility, a small craft pilot may have no other means of keeping his course in the water, especially on open waters that we have around Hawaii. Running out of time or; a given course in heavy weather or as night fall approaches is not conducive to good piece of mind. There is little comfort if change of course does not match what the chart is showing in the expected vicinity or unfamiliar waters. Volume I HCDC PICNIC-DIVE Another successful Council picnic has been recorded in our history book of activities. The Fourth Annual HCDC Picnic and Dive held at Haleiwa Alii Beach Park once more was again well attended by Council clubs. There was the usual boat diving in areas that most divers don’t frequent. Most of the land activities offered appealed to many participants in addition to the diving. Approximately 180 divers signed up and made dives from the 14 boats provided by both generous clubs and individuals. As usual, the Haleiwa Trench was available for those who wished to make a second dive or if they had missed boarding a boat during the time alloted. This year the spearfishing contest included a $1.00 entry fee which was divided equally between the…

Since the last report from Pacific Casting Club, the largest ulua caught kept on climbing upwards from Ron Orfs 71 pounder to Glenn Saiki’s 80 pounder and currently it stands at Leslie Hata’s 87 pound ulua caught in late August. Joe Raydon, our perpetual total weight leader has 27 ulua to his credit with a total weight of 764 ¼ pounds Much is said about Joes fantastic ulua catches year after year, but here are some of the other leaders in total weight so far this year. Glenn Saiki with 21 ulua and a total weight of 538 pounds. Wally Pilor has caught 19 ulua totaling 412 pounds. The rush to find an alternative source of energy for our fossil fuel dependent society has been cause for the development of some innovative approaches to the production of energy. One of the most innovative of all is the proposal for Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion, known more commonly as OTEC. The potential for OTEC in Hawaii is great, its potential consequences on Hawaii’s offshore fishery are a matter that must be considered in any evaluation of the promise of ocean thermal energy conversion. The loss overboard and apparent drowning this past weekend of a 35-year-old Kailua man brought the boating safety accident fatality total in Hawaii to 15 for the year, and emphasized an alarming trend that the U.S. Coast Guard is viewing with concern. The Coast Guard’s Division of Boating Safety in Honolulu pointed out these facts about the disturbing situation: * The number of fatalities stands at 15 thus far this year; last year the total was one, the year before, two. * Correlated statistics indicate that Hawaii’s rate of fatalities is five times greater than that of California-the state with the largest number of fatalities last year. * Nearly all of the accidents resulting in deaths have been caused by a lack of boating knowledge and/or carelessness. Twenty-seven teams weighed in 3,487-lbs of game fish during the three-day Hilo Trollers Labor Day Tournament held over the Labor Day weekend. Forty-six teams were on the starting line each morning at 6:00 a.m. and nineteen teams were unsuccessful in locating, or boating a catch during the tournament. The grand champion was Raymond Kawamoto and his crew aboard MISS JAN MAR who boated two marlin, one at 229½-lbs and the second at 597-lbs for a total of 826½-lbs.
