Of the more than 300 known species of sharks in the world, Hawaii boasts a representation of about 10% of these, or 33 species. Although the word “shark” stimulates a mental picture in most people’s mind of an ominous gray animal, there is indeed a wide variety of sharks. It was a real squeaker, right down until the last minute and the officials of the 2nd annual Fiftietfi State Invitational Trolling Tournament (FSlTT) found themselves waiting until well after dark on the last day of the event as no less than the top four teams were hooked up when the stop fishing signal was sounded on the last day. The Fiftieth State is a five-day trolling only, tournament cosponsored by the combined Big Island trolling clubs and the Hawaii Big Game Fishing Club. This year it was held from the 14th to the 18th of August, and fishing proved to be excellent—especially on the last day. Ho suggested that the PMP include mandatory registration of all billfish catches, whether recreational or commercial, to provide the data needed. A NMFS spokesman raised the subject of licensing as a means of getting and enforcing the collection of data and asked representatives of fishing clubs to sound out their memberships on the idea. By the end of the 1978 U.S. National Skindiving Spearfishing Championships held July 16th in Tarpon Springs, Fla., there was no doubt in anybody’s mind that the Hawaii Council of Diving Clubs was there and that the spirit of Aloha encompassed novice and experienced teams alike. Hawaii’s two three-man teams captured 9 out of 12 trophies including the National Championship for the 8th time in the past 9 years. The winning Hawaii #1 team, representing Alii Holo Kai were John Ernst, Terry Maas and Bill Ernst. Going into this year’s tourney, they had represented the U.S. in the last four World Championships. Innerspace Pacifica 78, a festival of underwater films and Scuba diving exhibits showing the adventure, intrigue, beauty and fun below the world’s seas, will be held at Honolulu’s McKinley High School Oct. 13-14, 1978, with repeat screenings at Maui’s Royal Lahaina Hotel on Oct 15-16, 1978. At the time, I was the Deputy Director of the Department of Parks and Recreation. Maui’s unprecedented marlin catch continues, and although none of the local skippers or fishermen will argue with the fabulous catches, many are wondering what has brought it all about. There are at least two factors involved. One is that there are just plain more marlin around this year-not only on Maui-but all over the State. Considering the fact that some Federal agencies are talking about limiting the blue marlin catch because the animals may be endangered-Maui’s significant marlin catch is that much more phenominal. The other factor at work here is there are just plain more boats fishing for marlin, with a more sophisticated attitude than ever before. Boom! The penetrating sound of the howitzer cannon welcomed each one of the 33 foreign teams. The hour-long parade, presenting the visiting teams to the people of Kona, was climaxed with the individual introduction of the sportsmen. The Marine band played their national anthem and a flag was raised in honor of their country. Bill “Cannon” Conrad, television personality and big game sportsman made the introductions. Danny Kaleikini and the children’s chorus added to our Hawaiian style. Reverend Dr. Henry Boshard, pastor of Mokuaikaua Church blessed each boat, fisherman and person present. The tie-down is a simple and cheap trick with numerous advantages for trailers. The idea is elementary: the use of some kind of release mechanism to hold the line lower than the rod tip until a fish hits. For light lures, the release mechanism can be a “snapper” type outrigger pin bolted to the gunwale or the transom. Lures with a lot of resistance need a stronger grip, which makes the rubber band a perfect tool. On a strike the line cuts through the rubber band instantly, releasing the line to run freely with the pull of the fish. Whereas the outrigger pin is a permanent and stationary fitting, the rubber band can be looped over the reel seat or a stern cleat to bring the line down as low…

There are many things going on which have an impact on diving. The last meeting included a presentation on “Water Quality Management” by the Dept, of Health. Because of our unique island configuration there is a strong emphasis on the affects of municipal sewerage & household waste disposal systems; industrial, commercial & agricultural wastes; erosion & sediment; urban stormwater run off, etc. on our marine environment. The presentation was well received by the club reps & there was a lively question & answer period. As divers who can spot adverse changes in the marine environment, we were asked to report such changes.
